School board gives OK for $35 million Mt. Abe bond vote

BRISTOL — A vote on a $35 million bond to renovate the 48-year-old Mount Abraham Union High School will definitely take place in November.

The Mount Abe school board this past Wednesday evening voted 8-1 in favor of the recommended major overhaul of the building.

“I think initial reaction will be sticker shock,” said board member Sandy Lee of Lincoln. “But if we don’t invest in this multimillion-dollar building are we going to let it just fall apart?”

Organic milk prices plummet across Vermont

VERMONT — A once-hot market for organic milk has cooled, and farmers are paying the price.

In the face of a market glut, companies are paying Vermont’s organic dairy farmers less for their product, at a cost of tens thousands of dollars to each farm.

Organic Valley, which buys milk from more than half of Vermont’s roughly 200 organic dairy farms, will be accepting less milk from farmers at its highest price and paying discount rates for additional milk.

Local food organization considers creating a facility to process crops and meats

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Relocalization Network (ACORN) is beginning a new chapter in its 12-year history of promoting sustainable, local sources of food and energy. The non-profit, grassroots organization has hired a new executive director who is leading an effort to create a new facility where small Addison County food producers could process and store their wares.

ACORN leaders last week formally announced Lynn Coale as the group’s new executive director.

MIDDLEBURY — The 12th Annual Kelly Brush Ride, powered by VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations is ready to roll on Saturday, Sept. 9, in Middlebury.

The bicycle and handcycle ride supports the Kelly Brush Foundation’s mission to empower those with paralysis through sport and recreation and to prevent ski racing injuries.

ANWSD negotiators strike a deal on a new teachers contract

VERGENNES — The Addison Northwest School District (ANWSD) and Addison Northwest Teachers’ Association have tentatively agreed on a new, two-year contract. Mark Koenig, a leader of the ANWSD board negotiating team, said the two sides reached the tentative deal at around 3 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, following a mediated session that lasted more than 11 hours.

The last teachers contract ran through June 30.

Winning the battle of the weeds

Surely weeds are some of nature’s greatest opportunists.

They appear spontaneously in places where other plants would not stand a chance, such as in disturbed soil or along the dry salty edges of Vermont’s beloved dirt roads.

And in our gardens? Within weeks of making our beds all tidy and seemingly weed-free, new weeds just pop up uninvited!

Middlebury to test for pollution at site of former factory in Otter Creek
