Letters to the Editor: Downtown needs traffic control help

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Ian Ross

I attended the ACTR temporary Hub (bus stop) relocation meeting a few weeks back. At this meeting an issue that has concerned me for several years was mentioned. On numerous occasions I have been present when another vehicle has gone the wrong way through Court Square onto North Pleasant Street.

Letters to the Editor: All should speak out, act against unjust deportations

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Tom Baskett and Jean Rosenberg

The Society of Friends (Quakers) has a 350-year history of speaking truth to power when they feel that the rights of individuals or groups are being threatened.  The recent escalation in deportation threats to our friends and neighbors in the farming community is extremely disturbing. The truth about these activities is that they do not make us safer — they divert taxpayer funds from more beneficial uses, they disrupt families, communities, and businesses and they violate the inherent rights of all people to be respected members of the human community.

Ways of Seeing, Johanna Nichols: At 200, Thoreau still speaks to us

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Johanna Nichols

Happy 200th anniversary of your birth Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817). I am sure you would have something to say about being remembered so many years later for the writer you dreamed to be in your lifetime. Before “Walden” was published, you spoke at the Concord Lyceum, in your Massachusetts hometown, about the interrelationship of God, man and nature. You ended your oration with these eight words “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” Little did you know how long that gift would keep on giving.

Victor Nuovo: Hobbes on religion

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Victor Nuovo

Editor’s note: This is the 17th essay by Middlebury College Professor Emeritus Victor Nuovo on the origins of western political thought, focusing on the great political thinkers.

In his own day, Hobbes was suspected of atheism. There is no historical evidence supporting this suspicion, neither in his writings, nor in any other surviving historical records about him. Nonetheless, this suspicion is a historical fact. His detractors, who were many, called him “the Monster of Malmesbury,” and held him in contempt.

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Angelo Lynn

A microcosm of a age-old debate played out during Middlebury’s Tuesday night selectboard meeting on the issue of economic development. The specific issue was whether to support an economic development plan proposed by an 11-member task force, but the larger question looming in the background was the more interesting: Just how much can government do to stimulate the economy?

MIDDLEBURY — On any given summer day up on Chipman Hill, pedestrians, mountain bikers, runners and their four-legged companions travel through the trees, grateful for the 132-acre forest’s peace and quiet less than a 10-minute walk from Middlebury town center. The town forests — Chipman Hill, Means Woods and Battell Woods — are available for all to enjoy, but, until now, have not been managed under any overarching plan.
