Posted on July 27, 2017 |

One individual comes up at least once a year with a 50-caliber tripod mounted machine gun.

Dr. Fred. Kniffin: Put health and well-being ahead of politics

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Fred Kniffin

This week’s Community Forum is by Dr. Fred Kniffin, president of the UVM Health Network’s Porter Medical Center

If you have been following the news about health care reform coming out of Washington, you may be both confused and concerned. The issue is complex. Emotions run high and there is a good deal of fatigue around the national debate, because it is an enormously important economic and human issue that touches each of our lives and it has become highly politicized and partisan.

By Addison Independent

If extraterrestrials were to visit Earth, we'd probably put a copy of “Hamlet” in their welcome basket. It's that good. Well over 400 years after William Shakespeare wrote the play (between 1599 and 1601), readers and audiences are still connecting with it.

George Jaeger: American alone?

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By George Jaeger

This week’s writer is George Jaeger, a retired Senior Foreign Service officer and former Diplomat-in-Residence at Middlebury College.  He and his wife Pat live in New Haven.

In six short months President Donald Trump has upended the world order. His erratic behavior and “America First” policies have cost us much of the world’s confidence and reversed over 70 years of long-term American foreign policy, in which we had successfully linked our interests with those of others.

Eric L. Davis: Economy doesn't match expectations

Posted on July 27, 2017 |
By Eric L. Davis

On Friday, the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis will release its initial estimate of U.S. economic growth in the second quarter of 2017. The consensus among economists is that the April-to-June growth number will come in at somewhere between 2.4 and 2.6 percent. While this would represent a substantial improvement from the 1.4 percent growth in the first three months of the year, it is well below the 3 percent-plus target for GDP growth that is part of the Trump Administration’s economic forecasts.
