Vermont historian to discuss book on War of 1812

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont historian Willard Sterne Randall will read from, discuss and sign his new book “Unshackling America: How the War of 1812 Truly Ended the American Revolution” on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at The Residence at Otter Creek, 350 Lodge Rd. in Middlebury.

Weybridge town picnic set for July 8

WEYBRIDGE — The town of Weybridge will hold its annual town picnic on Saturday, July 8, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Weybridge School.

This popular event will have something for townspeople of all ages. Snake Mountain Bluegrass will provide music, and there will be children’s games and the ever-popular competitions for best baked beans and best pie. Judges will consider two categories of pie this year: best fruit pie and best overall pie. The three first place winners will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Middlebury Natural Foods Co-op.

Legislative Review, Rep. Peter Conlon: Scott held state budget hostage

Last week’s veto session in the Legislature ended with what has been described as a compromise that few were happy with — therefore a true compromise. I would classify it as a hostage negotiation with Gov. Phil Scott, House Republicans and conservative independents to free the state budget, a hostage they all praised in glowing terms two months ago.

Letters to the Editor: Meals on Wheels loses its compass

Age Well (formerly the Champlain Valley Agency on Aging) seems to have bought into the Trumpish philosophy that money is more important than people. A whole community of volunteers in Addison County is incredulous and angry that the Meals on Wheels coordinator on the ground in the county has been dismissed so that a computer program and people in an office in Essex Junction can try to replace her.

Ways of Seeing, Johanna Nichols: The country needs more patriots

We’re coming up on our nation’s 241st birthday, so I thought to celebrate by reading the Declaration of Independence. 

Its second sentence is perhaps the most familiar to us: “We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
