MIDDLEBURY — At a March 21 meeting, the Middlebury selectboard reviewed town meeting poll results and feedback. Fifty-nine percent of 201 responders said they preferred to be informed on town news via “ newspaper,” followed by Front Porch Forum (38 percent) and town listserv (36 percent).
Forty-nine percent of respondents said they wanted to learn more about the upcoming rail bridges replacement project and proposed Ilsley Library expansion; next on the list was the town plan update at 36 percent.
VERGENNES — Bixby Library’s Writers Program will offer a free, eight-week workshop on writing memoirs. Kris Johannesson, who earned a Master’s in Fine Arts from Goddard College, will lead the workshop, which is titled “Memoir Writing 101.”
The class starts next Thursday, April 6, and will run Thursdays, 6-8 p.m., in the Otter Creek Room at the Bixby Memorial Free Library in Vergennes.
Congressional Republicans called Trump’s bluff Friday and guess who backed down? Trump did, with his tail between his legs. This week’s writer is the Rev. George Klohck, a retired United Methodist minister who lives in Middlebury.

Thoughtful planning ensures that we have wonderful meals and even more fulfilling conversations.

I appreciated the letter to the editor from LuAnn Chiola, in which she offered a thoughtful case for the student protesters who prevented author Charles Murray from speaking at a Middlebury College podium. Obviously reasonable people differ on this issue.
However, Ms. Chiola does not accurately reflect what I wrote when she criticizes my defense of Murray’s right to articulate his sometimes abhorrent views. I did not write of the protesters that “their cause is not rooted in morals or ethics.”

Middlebury College alumnus Steven Nothern ’78 shared his perspectives on events surrounding the campus visit of Charles Murray (Addison Independent, March 20). Although I can easily find points of agreement with Mr. Nothern, I respectfully disagree in two important ways.
