Panton to repair town hall steps; voters to rule on more complete fix

PANTON — When Panton residents arrive at town hall on Town Meeting Day, they will find safe new stairs leading up to the main gathering space — and a decision to make on other renovations to Panton Town Hall.

The decision to fix the deteriorating exterior stairs was made on Dec. 19, when Panton’s selectboard and Town Hall Committee met with representatives of Brandon’s McKernon Group and accepted that firm’s bid of roughly $29,000 for the work, with the provision it be done by March.

Joanna Colwell: There's no racial justice in tax bill

Walking in Middlebury today, I started wondering about how the Republican tax bill would affect my life. How much will our health care premiums go up? Will our self-employed family even be able to afford insurance? How are we going to pay for college? I feel worried about the future, and at the same time I am aware that every one of these challenges is way more difficult if you are a Black person in America.

Letter to the editor: Better business climate needed

Gov. Scott dodged the fundamental issues with funding education in Vermont. Stating that delivery to students was the big issue is a cop out and a lie. In the Dec. 21 Independent article on the subject the real issues “a declining workforce, sluggish economic growth and nearly stagnant tax revenues” are mentioned but dodged by the governor.

Letter to the editor: Cornwall firefighters were helpful, cheerful

At 6:30 on the morning of Christmas Eve our fire alarms went off. We searched the house, but could not find anything wrong. It then shut off so we went back to bed. Fifteen minutes later it went off again, this time not stopping. We decided to call the Cornwall Fire Department, telling them that it was not an emergency because there was no sign of smoke anywhere.

Poem: An ode to Christmases past, present and future

’Twas the night after Christmas and all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, except for a mouse.

 

Piles of debris and throwaway toys

Is all that remained from the wee girls and boys.

 

Children were nestled all snug in their beds

With cell phones and new apps tucked under their heads.
