Bristol Police Log: Police, wardens respond to report of shots fired

BRISTOL — Bristol police cooperated with Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife game wardens with gun incidents twice in two days earlier this month.

On Dec. 8 a Bristol police officer responded to a request for assistance looking into a report of shots fired on Plank Road in New Haven. The Bristol officer helped locate the vehicle of interest and a Vermont Fish and Game official conducted an investigation.

Vergennes Police Log: City police cite three for impaired driving

VERGENNES — Vergennes police said they cited three drivers into court for impaired driving this past weekend, two for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and one for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs.

On Sunday, Dec. 17, city police cited Melissa Henderson, 43, of Middlebury for DUI-alcohol. Police said they stopped her car for allegedly failing to honor the stop sign at New Haven Road and Route 7, and allege her blood-alcohol level tested at 0.170; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

Vermont State Police Log: Car crashes increase as roads get slippery

ADDISON COUNTY — Winter weather finally arrived for real last week and one could see the effects of slippery roads in the number of serious motor vehicle crashes in Addison County, particularly on Dec. 12 in the heart of the snowstorm, four of which Vermont State Police handled.

Faith in Vermont: This Little Light

One week ago, my daughters made beeswax candles for the first time. Before you get impressed, this was not the sort of candle making that involves dipping wicks into a vat of hot wax; our sort of candle making involved ordering sheets of colored beeswax and a spool of wicking. Cut a length of wicking about one inch longer than the beeswax, lay it at one end of the sheet, and roll. Voila!

Immigration advocates protest new policing policy

PITTSFORD — Immigration advocates are protesting the Vermont Criminal Justice Council’s updated language in a state law designed to encourage fair policing.

But the chairman of the VCJC says those same advocates were involved in the updating process and are smearing the council. The VCJC has said the language in the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy must be changed in order to comply with tighter federal immigration rules or risk losing grant funding.

Grant to fund opiate education in Bristol-area grade schools

MIDDLEBURY — A federal grant will be used to “HELP” students in Bristol-area schools learn about and fight opiate addiction.

The $15,000 Regional Prevention Partnership grant, which flows through the Vermont Department of Health to the United Way of Addison County, will enhance UWAC’s “HELP” initiative.

Local United Way searching for a new leader: McGowan steps down after 14 years

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County Executive Director Kate McGowan has helped the leaders of a lot of local nonprofits strategize on funding and delivering charitable services to the people who need them most.

After 14 years spent improving human services in Addison County, McGowan now wants to help nonprofits on a statewide scale. On Thursday she announced that she’s resigning from her position to become interim director of the Center for New Leadership, or CNL, which is run out of the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro.
