Immigration advocates protest new policing policy

PITTSFORD — Immigration advocates are protesting the Vermont Criminal Justice Council’s updated language in a state law designed to encourage fair policing.

But the chairman of the VCJC says those same advocates were involved in the updating process and are smearing the council. The VCJC has said the language in the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy must be changed in order to comply with tighter federal immigration rules or risk losing grant funding.

Grant to fund opiate education in Bristol-area grade schools

MIDDLEBURY — A federal grant will be used to “HELP” students in Bristol-area schools learn about and fight opiate addiction.

The $15,000 Regional Prevention Partnership grant, which flows through the Vermont Department of Health to the United Way of Addison County, will enhance UWAC’s “HELP” initiative.

Local United Way searching for a new leader: McGowan steps down after 14 years

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County Executive Director Kate McGowan has helped the leaders of a lot of local nonprofits strategize on funding and delivering charitable services to the people who need them most.

After 14 years spent improving human services in Addison County, McGowan now wants to help nonprofits on a statewide scale. On Thursday she announced that she’s resigning from her position to become interim director of the Center for New Leadership, or CNL, which is run out of the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro.

Take a snapshot of Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater today, and what do you see? A glamorous but comfortable 232-seat community space that hosts approximately 165 performances every year. Acts range from dog shows to films, local theater to professional operas, and everything in between. The theater and its staff are funded by a comfortable revenue stream supported by ticket sales and donations.

The Outside Story: A walk in the woods — following plants that follow stream beds

I followed a stream downhill through the woods as it coursed through a small ravine. At the base of the hill, just before the brook entered a wetland, a patch of unusual-looking plants was growing amongst moss on a decaying tree root that spanned the stream. They were round and flat with lobed edges, and only the size of a dime. A couple of other patches grew nearby. Here the plants had branched out from their round bases, extending flat green ribbons across the damp soil.

Vermonters react to FCC's repeal of internet neutrality

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Communications Commission repealed Obama-era internet neutrality regulations on a party-line vote Thursday.

In the hours after the decision, many Vermont officials came out strongly against the move.

All three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation signed on to legislation that would restore the regulations. Meanwhile, top Vermont officials weighed options that could be taken at a state level.

Watershed Center's Solstice Celebration set for this Thursday

BRISTOL — The year’s longest night has at last arrived and that means it’s time for the annual Winter Solstice Celebration at the Waterworks Property on Plank Road in Bristol. Revelers of all ages are invited to venture into the forest and mark the moment when the sun stands still on the southern horizon and turns to begin its march to summer.
