Bristol food shelf looks to Saturday's Fill the Firehouse Food Drive

BRISTOL — The cupboards are just about bare at Bristol’s Have a Heart Community Food Shelf. Literally. With the exception of some canned and packaged foods in reserve for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, last Friday’s regular monthly distribution cleaned out the food pantry that serves the 5-town area.

Public asks medical center execs about the future of health care

MIDDLEBURY — While the heads of Porter Medical Center and University of Vermont Health Network came to Monday evening’s community forum to talk about how the affiliation of the two institutions has gone over the past six months, many of those at the event were looking at their health care going forward.

One prominent question from the audience of around 60 at the Middlebury Regional EMS building was how their care will change as Porter transitions to an “all-payer” system.

2017 Chamber of Commerce Award recipients honored in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Kennedy Brothers, Sweet Charity and Swift House Inn owner Dan Brown received top honors at the annual meeting of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night at the Vergennes Opera House. The event drew a crowd of about 70 for dinner, silent auction and the awards presentations.

Kennedy Brothers received the 2017 Business of the Year Award, which recognizes businesses that have grown, sometimes despite adversity, while providing excellent products or services while doing well by their employees and the community.

Jessie Raymond: 'Friendly skies' tough on stomach

During a layover in the Newark airport on the way back to Burlington Monday, I had one thought: “Stop the world, I wanna get off.”

I didn’t mean it in a metaphorical sense. I meant the world before me was literally spinning, the result of several consecutive days of carsickness, capped off by a rambunctious flight during which the attendants spent most of the time strapped into their jump seats, praying.

Letter to the Editor: Deferring Mount Abe work wouldn't be wise

Thirty-five million might seem like a lot of money, and it is a lot of money. But a vote for the Mt. Abe Renovation Bond on Thursday, Nov. 2, will be less expensive by far than continuing to put off work that is desperately needed. Like the homeowner who refuses to fix a leaky roof in order to save in the short term and ends up paying way more than the original roofing bill, for sheathing, rafters and rot repair, we cannot afford to kick this can down the road.
