New weapon vs. milfoil deployed

Posted on July 1, 2016 |
By Emma Cotton

SALISBURY — Between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on any given work day, residents and their guests at Lake Dunmore are likely to see a coordinated team of nine working toward a common goal: ridding the lake of Eurasian watermilfoil (commonly called milfoil), a feathery invasive weed that has been choking Dunmore and its neighbor, Fern Lake, for decades.

The crew has three boats, called suction harvesters, and they collect anywhere between 20 and 100 buckets of the unwanted plant per day.

Wrapped up in Quilting

Posted on July 1, 2016 |
By Elsie Lynn Parini

quilt9051.jpg

Let's start with the obvious. Quilters are crazy. That's right, crazy!

They cut up tiny pieces of fabric, thread minuscule needles, with even smaller thread, stuff yards and yards of fabric through a violent stabbing machine, and then spend hours, days, weeks, months, even years on a project before announcing “I'm done.” But the craziest part, is that quilters  aren't ever satisfied with the finished product.

Obstacle running: Bristol man won't take the easy path

Posted on July 1, 2016 |
By Ellie Reinhardt

MountainRunnersGroup.jpg

BRISTOL — Who is that group on Mount Abe running with weights on their backs and determination in their faces?

It’s probably Brian Ladeau and Team Sinergy, a group of Vermonters hooked on obstacle course racing.

For the past four years, Ladeau, a 45-year-old Bristol resident and the owner of Otter Creek Custom Framing in Middlebury, has been running, hiking and lifting his way through some of the toughest obstacle courses around.

Ladeau said the passion started out as a dare among gym buddies.

Posted on July 1, 2016 |
By Angelo Lynn

The challenge Republican Phil Scott has long foreseen in his race for the governorship is how to rise to star power without taking controversial positions that raise red flags to the moderate majorities in the state. He has done that well. By taking moderate stands on most controversial issues, he’s become known as the go-along to get-along candidate; a Mr. Nice Guy.

Nothing wrong with that when you’re number two (as lieutenant governor) or as one of the Republican minority in the Legislature.

Community forum: Job incentive effort has been a success

Posted on July 1, 2016 |
By Fred Kenney

The Vermont Economic Progress Council (VEPC) is a citizen board including two legislators. When it authorizes incentives to businesses through the Vermont Employment Growth Incentive program (VEGI), no taxpayer dollars go to the company. VEPC determines whether the company and project meet statutory criteria and, if approved, the company is authorized to earn incentives. Incentives are paid only if and when performance requirements are met and maintained. The state receives incremental tax revenues from the project before any incentive is paid.
