MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team will make its 13th consecutive and 16th overall appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament this weekend, but the 16-2 Panthers will not host a regional after falling at undefeated Bowdoin, 2-1, in Sunday’s NESCAC final.

MIDDLEBURY — With the help of four interceptions, the Middlebury College football team on Saturday improved to 5-2 with a 21-16 win over visiting Hamilton (1-6) in the Panthers’ final 2015 home game. Middlebury concludes its season on this Saturday at Tufts.
Middlebury scored on its third play from scrimmage, when quarterback Matt Milano hit Matthew Minno over the middle before the wide receiver broke a pair of tackles and raced downfield for a 70-yard touchdown reception to make it 6-0.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a three-on-three basketball tournament that will be held on Nov. 28 at the Middlebury municipal building gymnasium.
The cost for a team of four for an event that drew a number of teams a year ago is $75.
The winning team will receive T-shirts, and the top three teams will earn medals, organizers said.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Williams defeated the Middlebury College women’s soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday in a NESCAC semifinal, ending the Panthers’ season with a 7-5-4 record and avenging the 16-1-1 Ephs’ only loss of the season.
The Ephs, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division III, defeated Bowdoin, 2-0, in the NESCAC final on Sunday to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

COLCHESTER — Middlebury Aquatic Club swimmers, with coaches Mike Delaney and Jennifer Bechthold, traveled to St. Michael’s College in Colchester on Sunday, Nov. 1, to compete in their first meet of the season, the GMA IMX Challenge Meet. Several swimmers achieved best times, with Thomas Denton placing first in four events and Charlie Hodson placing first in one event.

MIDDLEBURY — Brian Carpenter, 53, was first interested in the military as a way to get a college degree without being too encumbered by debt. What grew out of that was a very successful career in the Army and the National Guard and a life dedicated to service.
The Middlebury native, who owns and runs farm equipment dealership Champlain Valley Equipment in his hometown, served 30 years in the Army and Army National Guard, and retired a year ago as the second in command of Guard forces in Vermont and with the rank of general.
