As officers of the Addison Volunteer Fire Department, we would like to clarify several items that were reported in the April 17 Addison Independent under the headline “Addison buys new firetruck.” This is also so townspeople do not think the selectboard was stepping outside their bounds.

In support of the upcoming Article 1 (former Article 6) municipal building vote, I’d like to point out that the vote in March was very consistent in favor of the project: Article 6, yes; petition to take more time to consider other plans, no; selectman who most vociferously opposed the project, not re-elected — all with a large voter turn out.

As the Phase 2 pipeline controversy continues to swirl, it is important that everyone understand that we are being used by International Paper and the various government entities in New York to bypass their own homegrown obstacle to a natural gas line to the mill. That obstacle is their precious Adirondack Park.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard this past Tuesday set an agenda for an April 29 public information meeting the town of Middlebury will be hosting about the Phase II Addison-Rutland Natural Gas Project.
That meeting will focus on the proposed construction of a natural gas pipeline from Middlebury through Cornwall and Shoreham and under Lake Champlain to the International Paper Co. in Ticonderoga, N.Y.
VERGENNES — Although hurdles must still be cleared, the Vermont Department of Education has jointly awarded Vergennes Union elementary and high schools a five-year, $767,426 grant to establish an afterschool program at VUES, preserve and enhance the VUHS afterschool and summer school programs, and enhance the VUES summer school program.
ADDISON COUNTY — How will Vermont ensure that the landscape is not overrun with suburban-type sprawl? One state-funded board is betting that a new cider press, an egg washer and a portable sawmill will help.
The Working Lands Enterprise Board recently awarded $300,000 in grants to 19 businesses across the state, including three in Addison County. The local recipients of grants were Windfall Orchard in Cornwall, Doolittle Farm in Shoreham and Green Mountain Hardwood in Ripton.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Gas officials are reaching out to Salisbury and Leicester officials to begin a public information campaign about its “Phase III” pipeline project that could deliver natural gas to Rutland County as soon as 2020.
