HOPE’s  ‘giving  tree’  to  be  replaced  with  new  shop

MIDDLEBURY — Helping Overcome Poverty’s Effects (HOPE) this year will be making a major change in the way it solicits gifts for local children who otherwise wouldn’t receive any this holiday season.

The organization is electing to abandon its “giving tree” program in favor of establishing a second holiday gift shop at its Community Services Center off Boardman Street.

Bristol girls' soccer raises funds, awareness on breast cancer

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team joined hands with the National Foundation for Cancer Research to participate in its fundraising campaign Play4theCure, in which sports teams across the country donate proceeds from at least one game to NFCR.

The Eagles raised $146 for NFCR during their games versus Missisquoi Valley Union High School this past Saturday in Bristol.

WomenSafe award funding to continue transitional housing

Foster Brothers farm wins conservation award

MIDDLEBURY — Foster Brothers Farm in Middlebury has been awarded the Conservation Farmer of the Year Award by the Otter Creek Natural Resources Conservation District.

“This is part of our annual meeting every year,” said Jonathan Chamberlin, chair of the conservation district. “We dovetail it with our Conservation Farmer of the Year Award.”

Middlebury eyes major repairs to Ilsley Library, town pool

MIDDLEBURY — While the prospect of building new municipal offices and a new recreation center is grabbing most of the headlines in Middlebury these days, the town is also taking stock in two other substantial capital projects: major repairs to a portion of the Ilsley Public Library roof, and the need to install a liner in the town swimming pool.

Grant is key to new city playground

VERGENNES — The proposed Vergennes toddler playground has a few hurdles to clear before it can be built near the city pool this spring. The project depends on whether the city receives a $25,000 state grant, aldermen heard at their Oct. 8 meeting.

Alderman and city recreation committee head Joe Klopfenstein and City Manager Mel Hawley updated the council on the proposed toddler park at that meeting.
