The Outside Story: For the pussy willow, spring is it’s time to shine

Last fall, I went to a nearby wetland with a pair of clippers and cut twigs from one willow shrub after another. It wasn’t hard to tell the willows from the non-willows because willows are the only woody plants in this area whose buds are covered by a single bud scale. These cute, pointy caps are very different from the overlapping scales that protect most buds through the winter. And the few woody plants with no protective scales are easily recognizable: their naked, embryonic leaves rely on a coating of woolliness to keep them from desiccating or freezing.

Fishing derbies on tap for Vermont children

VERMONT — The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department has released a list of upcoming fishing events around the state, most of them intended just for kids.

The department has a “Children’s Fishing Program” which provides kids with the opportunity for a fun and successful fishing experience at locally organized fishing events. Organizers of these events often are charitable, community, or nonprofit groups such as fire departments, fish and game clubs, Rotary, Lions, town recreation committees, 4-H clubs, and scouts.

ANwSU residents to vote on $600,000 VUHS roof loan

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday will decide whether to support a proposal put forth by the Vergennes Union High School board for a five-year, $600,000 loan to put a new roof on the school’s leaky classroom wing and auditorium.

If voters back the $600,000 loan, payments would add about $10 of annual taxes per $100,000 of assessed home value, according to an estimate offered in April by ANwSU business manager Kathy Cannon. Those who are eligible for prebates would not pay the full amount of that increase.

'End of Life Choices' bill clears Senate thanks to Ayer

Bristol selectboard seeks applicants for fire station panel

BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard will be accepting applications from those wishing to serve on a planning committee as the search for an improved facility for Bristol’s fire department proceeds. Committee members will do the legwork on site selection and may continue serving into the design stage. Applications for the committee will be posted on the town’s website later this week, and will also be available at the town office.
