In boys' lax: Cougars pounce on Tigers, 14-­7

MIDDLEBURY — The resurgent Middlebury Union High School boys’ lacrosse program hit a bump in the road on Saturday, when an inspired visiting Mount Mansfield squad snapped a halftime tie on the way to a 14-7 victory over the Tigers.

Tiger squad wins a dozen events at Milton track and field meet

MILTON — Middlebury Union High School track and field athletes won a dozen events on May 7 as both the Tiger boys and girls earned overall victories at a three-team meet hosted by Milton.

The Tiger boys scored 84 points to defeat Milton (40) and Hazen (31), while the Tiger girls picked up 68 points to top Milton (57) and Hazen (10).

Input sought for Vergennes downtown improvements: event set for May 22

VERGENNES — Residents of Vergennes are invited to attend the Vergennes Downtown/Recreation Planning Forum on Wednesday, May 22, from 7-9 p.m. at the Vergennes Opera House. The city of Vergennes, in collaboration with the Vergennes Partnership and the Vergennes Opera House, has planned this meeting as an opportunity for the public to discuss recreation and downtown projects identified in the city plan that will increase the standard of living and community well-being of Vergennes residents.

Bristol Beat: Raffle aims to keep history 'afloat'

BRISTOL — The First Baptist Church of Bristol is raffling of a one-seater canoe and paddle made and donated by Stephen Ahern of Starksboro. Proceeds will help to keep the historic community First Baptist Church buildings “afloat.”

The church, one of Bristol’s historic landmarks, has stood since 1819. The last major renovation was in 1925 when, among other work, stained glass windows were added. Proceeds generated by the raffle will help ensure that the building can continue to be maintained and updated.

‘Ride in Silence’ event planned May 15

VERMONT — All area cyclists are invited to participate in a “Ride of Silence” on Wednesday evening, May 15, to honor bicyclists who have been injured or killed in crashes involving motor vehicles. The Ride of Silence is an annual event that happens on the same day across the U.S. and around the world.

Editorial: The making of political cynics

The cynic among us would note that the biggest danger of the Legislature not adjourning this past weekend is how much damage it can do in two more days.

A kinder analysis would note that because many budget issues were still unresolved, and the tax bill still incomplete, any late night heroics to finish by Saturday would have also been prone to error.

While the changes set in motion by the various uprisings in the Arab world remain works in progress, it might still be revealing to examine the role played by U.S. involvement and foreign policy in shaping events.
