Contractors compete for Middlebury tunnel work

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials on Nov. 19 interviewed three New York-based companies competing for the right to serve as general contractor for the upcoming replacement of the downtown railroad overpasses on Merchants Row and Main Street.

The three companies in the running include:

•  Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors Inc. of Glenmont, N.Y.

•  Tetra Tech Construction of Gloversville, N.Y.

State confronted with budget challenges

MONTPELIER (AP) — The growing numbers of pre-trial detainees in Vermont prisons and paying sheriffs to monitor mentally ill patients in hospital emergency rooms are among the many budget pressures facing Vermont state government.

That word came Wednesday as officials with the administration of Gov. Peter Shumlin briefed lawmakers on the budget challenges they’re expected to face when they return in January.

ANESU looks for new business manager

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union is looking for a new business manager, the district said on its website. The current Chief Financial Officer is Ed Gomeau.

The chief financial officer oversees a staff of six, reports directly to the superintendent, and oversees $27 million in expenditures annually, the job posting stated. When reached for comment, district data and communications specialist Karen Wheeler declined to say when or why Gomeau was leaving, though the job posting said the new contract start date is Jan. 15, 2014.

Fundraising for playground begins in Bristol

BRISTOL — The Bristol Green Playground Committee, which is raising funds to build a new playground on the town green, kicked off its fundraising campaign this past Wednesday at the Bobcat Café on Main Street.

The committee, a joint venture of the Bristol Recreation Department and the Bristol Downtown Community Partnership, is using the crowd-funding website indiegogo.com to raise money. The goal is to raise $11,000 in 30 days — as of Nov. 22 at noon, $3,415 had been raised from 26 donations, most of which were between $25 and $50.

Addison Central School recognized for energy efficiency

RICHMOND — State and federal officials joined with Efficiency Vermont and the Vermont Superintendents Association earlier this month to confer Energy Star recognition on 11 schools, including Addison Central School. The sought-after designation indicates that the schools are in the top 25 percent nationally for energy efficiency, and that they meet stringent standards for health, ventilation, comfort and lighting quality.

UD-3 board sees hope in Creek Road site for new town gym

Cider entrepreneurs hunt for lost apples

CORNWALL — Colin Davis and David Dolginow are on a mission to find apples. One would think that would not be a tough task in Addison County, a hub of apple production in the Green Mountain State.

But the two friends and business associates are not looking for just any apples. They are looking for once-abundant varieties that pretty much vanished from the landscape 80 years ago, fruit they want to reintroduce as the foundation for a new hard cider brand they hope to launch in the near future.
