In 1998, the tobacco industry settled its Medicaid lawsuit with 46 states by, among other things, agreeing to pay the states a minimum of $206 billion over the first 25 years of the agreement. In Vermont, our share was estimated to total $962 million.
In a sense, that was free money. We had no right to expect it. True, the tobacco companies were responsible for creating the problem in the first place, but sugar also has an impact on public health, and the sugar industry isn’t sending us million dollar checks.

FERRISBURGH — Co-director Adam Kane will leave the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at the end of the summer to take over the helm of the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium in St. Johnsbury.
Chairman of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Board of Directors Darcey Hale earlier this month announced that move, which will be effective Sept. 1.

MIDDLEBURY — Marble Valley Regional Transit District (MVRTD) jointly with Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) will increase public transit bus service between Rutland and Middlebury starting Monday, July 8.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College is world-renowned for its summer Language Schools and the Bread Loaf School of English. Starting next year, the college will add one more intensive summer program to its portfolio: a six-week, interdisciplinary, “full-engagement” School of the Environment, which will bring students, faculty and guest speakers from around the world to Vermont.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Livestock has at least temporarily put on hold plans to build a new slaughterhouse and meat-cutting facility in Middlebury’s industrial park, and is instead seeking to move those operations into an existing building in that same area.
The Ferrisburgh-based company has filed an application with Middlebury’s planning office calling for Vermont Livestock to redevelop and occupy approximately two-thirds of the 31,174-square-foot building at 183 Industrial Ave., owned by Anthony Neri.

BRANDON — A pillar of the Brandon and Forest Dale communities was tragically killed last week, but hundreds of people who knew and loved Maxine Thurston put aside their grief to celebrate her life on Sunday.
Thurston, 81, co-owner of New England Woodcraft in Forest Dale, was killed on Thursday, June 13, in a head-on collision while driving on Route 7 near Otter Valley Union High School.
