Festival on-the-Green keeps Middlebury humming this week

MIDDLEBURY — The green in downtown Middlebury is a happening place this week as the venue for the Middlebury Summer Festival on-the-Green celebrating its 35th Season from July 7-13.

The week opened on Sunday evening with the Brooklyn-based Lake Street Dive. The four-piece ensemble pleased the crowd with two sets of soulful pop music on a beautiful evening under the tent next to St. Stephen’s church.

Bristol man drowns on July Fourth

BRISTOL — Post-parade Fourth of July festivities took a tragic turn in Bristol on Thursday afternoon. A 26-year-old Bristol man was swept away while swimming in the New Haven River between the twin bridges on Route 116 north of Bristol village.

Officials recovered the body at 10:15 a.m. on July 5. The victim was identified as Steven Orvis, 26, of Bristol.

Vermont State Police Lt. William Jenkins said a call came in to police at around 3 p.m. regarding a man who had been swept away from the Bartlett Falls swimming area in Bristol.

Little known Edward Hopper paintings on display in Middlebury

Several years ago at the Vermont History Expo in Tunbridge, Bonnie Tocher Clause was standing beside the collection of prints she had assembled of Edward Hopper’s Vermont watercolor paintings when someone said, “These are nice paintings. Did you do them?”

Weybridge to decide on uses for embezzlement settlement money

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents will be asked in September to weigh in on possible uses of a $475,980 in insurance reimbursement money the town has received after the embezzlement case involving former Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson.

Weybridge Selectwoman Gale Hurd said the money must be earmarked for municipal projects, and not for schools. Residents could also recommend returning all or a portion of the funds to taxpayers by lowering the municipal property tax rate.

Middlebury College student killed in R.I. crash

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College student died in an automobile accident in Rhode Island just after 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Ian Cameron, 24, a senior sociology and psychology major, was thrown from his vehicle after his car hit a guardrail and flipped. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

A resident of East Greenwich, R.I., Cameron planned to complete his studies at Middlebury after the upcoming fall semester.

Winners in summer's first triathlon post blazing times

SALISBURY — Thirty-one-year-old Jason Frank of Burlington became only the ninth triathlete, out of more than 15,000 entrants over 29 years, to break one hour in winning the Vermont Sun Triathlon, which was contested June 30 at and around Branbury State Park in Salisbury.

Frank completed the 600-yard swim, 14-mile bike and 3.1-mile run in 59 minutes and 45 seconds.

Former winner Chris Coffey of New Haven turned in a great race with a 1:01:32 finish to take second.

Mount Abe's Jona Scott helps Vermont win golf match vs. N.H.

WOODSTOCK — Recent Mount Abraham Union graduate Jona Scott capped his high school career on June 27 by helping his Vermont golf team defeat New Hampshire, 22-8, in the annual Julian Cup competition, which was held at the Woodstock Country Club and pits top senior golfers from each state against one another.

Local Legion baseball team posts four victories

MIDDLEBURY — As the American Legion baseball season neared the midway point, Addison County faced a tough test, a recent stretch of five games in five days.

AC responded with four wins, while the fifth game was suspended entering the ninth inning. Addison was set to visit Montpelier on this past Tuesday and South Burlington the next day, but both games were postponed due to bad weather.
