Starksboro couple teams up with Mount Abe to fight hunger

STARKSBORO — A Starksboro couple is spearheading an effort to send more than a quarter of a million meals to hungry children in Haiti, and is enlisting the help of students and student athletes at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Nancy and Greg Orvis are raising money for With Love From Vermont, a Chittenden County-based charity that reaches into Addison and Rutland counties, which sends food packages to targeted audiences in poor countries.

Middlebury to welcome Leggett, Hamlin into Hall of Fame

MIDDLEBURY — Every autumn the Middlebury High School/Middlebury Union High School Alumni Association honors graduates by inducting them into its Hall of Fame.

Janet Malzac Leggett and Robert Hamlin will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this Friday, Sept. 27, at the Middlebury Union High School football game against Champlain Valley Union High School.

Addison board OKs updated zoning rules

ADDISON — The Addison Planning Commission on Sept. 16 formally adopted its new proposed update to zoning regulations and agreed to forward the laws to the town selectboard.

Chairman Frank Galgano said planners opted to make only minor changes to the document after the formal public hearing they held the week before.  

“Essentially it’s the same proposal we presented on that evening,” Galgano said.

Middlebury Methodists celebrate a new direction

Panther women's soccer is on the rise

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team opened its season with two disappointments, an overtime loss at Amherst when the Panthers were missing their entire freshman class due to a scheduling conflict, and a weather-shortened tie at Keene State, a game they were dominating.

But since then, the Panthers have looked like the team that played well enough in 2012 to host an NCAA Division III regional, the program’s seventh NCAA appearance.

Eagles host X-C meet after upgrades to course

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ and boys’ cross-country runners each finished third among four teams on Tuesday in the Eagles’ only home meet of the season.

The Eagle girls were paced by senior Natalie May, who was sixth in 22:12, while junior Chris Carter took fourth to lead the Mount Abe boys.

Boys' soccer: Eagles remain perfect; Commodores win; Tigers fall

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ soccer action on Tuesday, Mount Abraham won on the road to reach the midpoint of the regular season with an unbeaten record, Vergennes won at home in double overtime to reach .500, and Middlebury lost at home. Otter Valley (3-3) was idle earlier this week.
