Mount Abe wrapping up year with Fine Arts Festival

BRISTOL — The Addison Northeast Supervisory Union will be holding its 27th annual Fine Arts Festival at Mount Abraham Union High School from May 7-9. This event features the accomplishments of the students from the district in visual and performing arts. The results of a year of teaching and learning will be shared with the five-town community through displays and performances. The artwork of over 1,000 students from within the district will be displayed. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

Cornwall's Donavan excels on world stage in triathlon

CORNWALL — A little motion picture called “Iron Man 3” opened this past weekend.

Addison County has its own Ironman, whom you won’t be able to find at the movie theaters. This Ironman can swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 and then run a full, 26.2-mile marathon in one day — then go home and put her three kids to bed while holding down a full-time administrative job.

And she does it without a metal suit or computer-generated imagery.

MIDDLEBURY — As the first female acting governor of Massachusetts, the youngest woman to be elected to the Massachusetts State Senate and former vice president of an innovative venture capital fund, Jane Swift — who sidelines as a professor at Williams College, political advocate, and mom of three — is used to being a trailblazer.

But for all of her varied accomplishments, the CEO of Middlebury Interactive Languages may well have been destined to end up working for education advancement.

Ferrisburgh News: School hosts film on obesity

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh Central School, as part of its commitment to the continual improvement of the health and nutrition of the community, will host a screening of “Consequences,” part 1 of the four-part HBO documentary “The Weight of the Nation” on Monday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the FCS gymnasium. The series features case studies and interviews with leading experts and with individuals and families struggling with obesity. It shows how obesity affects the nation and what individuals and communities can do.

MIDDLEBURY — For nearly a decade, a growing number of Vermonters have pledged to try a new way of commuting during the weeklong Way to Go! Commuter Challenge. This year the statewide event is being held May 13-17. Way to Go! promotes economical, environmentally friendly, safe alternatives to driving solo. Opera company offers fans a chance to meet the singers

MIDDLEBURY — The Opera Company of Middlebury, now in its 10th season, has become a popular stop for talented young opera singers on their way to great careers. But there’s another big attraction.

“When these singers come to Middlebury they immediately feel as if they’re part of the community,” says OCM artistic director Douglas Anderson. “They make a lot of friends in the area, which is unusual, and one reason for that is ‘Meet the Singers.’”

Saturday road race to raise funds for Lincoln school

LINCOLN — The third annual Lincoln Mountain Magic 5K/10K Run-Walk happens Saturday, May 11, at 9 a.m., starting at the Lincoln Community School. The courses run through gentle hills in Lincoln providing variety for all athletic levels, and this year cash prizes will be awarded to male/female winners of both races and male/female winners age 12 and under in the 5K. The race is sponsored by the Friends of Lincoln Community School with proceeds supporting educational and enrichment activities at the school.
