Is the most recent move to legalize hemp cultivation in Vermont a step in the right direction or foolhardy? That’s the question on the minds of some legislators and citizens throughout the state as it comes before the full Legislature this week.
ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham recorded a shutout win at Middlebury to highlight local high school baseball action late last week. In other action, Otter Valley remained unbeaten, Vergennes lost a pair of contests, and MUHS also dropped a weekend home game.
A week ago in Monday’s Addison Independent, we ran a story touting the possibility of the greater-Middlebury area becoming a ski destination for Nordic skiers. The newly implemented snow-making system at the Rikert Ski Touring Center is what has prompted the consideration and has some within the community talking about ways to capitalize on the $1.5 million in improvements that Rikert has seen in the past couple of years.

The Scoop on Poop
As a seasonal park ranger at the only Vermont State Park that allows dogs off-leash in a designated area, I pick up a tremendous amount of doggie doo. Recently, I began thinking seriously about the impact of pet waste on our environment, and started doing some research.
BRISTOL — Bristol police on April 11 hosted the fifth Bristol community crime forum, which had a focus on school safety in light of the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
Attendees were briefed on the progress of forums to date by facilitator Kate McGowan and current status of drug crime issues by Police Chief Kevin Gibbs.
Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent David Adams and his staff detailed safety changes made in Five Town Area schools since the Newtown tragedy and fielded questions.
