VERGENNES — Vergennes Partnership and city officials are looking for public input at a jointly sponsored Wednesday night Vergennes Opera House forum on a series of planned and potential recreation improvements around the city.

They are hoping for enough residents to attend the 7 p.m. gathering to have about a dozen sign up for each of four working groups devoted to specific issues, according to a partnership press release:

City weighs smoking law versus policy

Posted on May 20, 2013 |

VERGENNES — Vergennes aldermen at their meeting last week moved closer to adopting a policy that would ban tobacco use in the area around the city pool and on the city’s central green.

A council subcommittee will look at model policies and ordinances offered last week by a tobacco prevention expert and make a recommendation at the council’s May 28 meeting.

A policy could be a gateway to a law that calls for tickets and fines, depending on how well the policy works.

Milk-loss payments arriving just in time for local farmers

Posted on May 20, 2013 |
By Addison Independent

WASHINGTON — Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on Thursday said $2.2 million in milk program safety net payments are arriving just as Vermont dairy farmers need them most, as spring planting begins. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last week announced the payments under the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC) program that provides support in months when the price that farmers are paid for their milk drops while production costs remain high.

VERGENNES — Unfortunately for visiting Mount Abraham, the Vergennes Union High School boys’ lacrosse team chose Saturday to play its best game of the season — and probably of the past four years.

The Commodores bolted to a 4-0 first quarter lead and survived a second-quarter Eagle surge on the way to a 13-7 victory that moved VUHS to 4-6.

2013 Legislative Wrap: Lawmakers hail productive session

Posted on May 20, 2013 |
By John Flowers

MONTPELIER — Addison County lawmakers generally gave good marks to a now-concluded 2013 legislative session that produced a General Fund budget of almost $1.4 billion that did not require the raising of new broad-based tax money, but did produce higher fees at the pump to leverage additional federal aid to repair the state’s roads, bridges and culverts.
