VERGENNES — Representatives of Vermont Gas Systems Inc. told Vergennes aldermen on Jan. 29 that natural gas — which they said is a cheaper form of energy than oil, propane and electric heat — will be available to most, but not all, city residents by 2015.
VERGENNES — At the Vergennes City Council meeting last Tuesday, Jan. 29, aldermen made a decision on a future police station proposal and talked with Vermont Gas Systems about its plan to bring natural gas to the city.

BRISTOL — The number of candidates running for the Bristol selectboard dwindled to two last week. Bristol Planning Commission member Kris Perlee withdrew his petition for his candidacy on the selectboard before the ballot was finalized at 5 p.m. Wednesday, after press time for the last issue of the Independent.
“Due to possible conflicts with planning commission, other commitments, and time with my family, I do not believe this is the best time for me to run,” Perlee said on Thursday.
MIDDLEBURY — Barring successful mediation, a Rutland County jury on May 6 will begin hearing a lawsuit filed in 2011 by former Addison Central Supervisory Union Business Manager Sharon Stearns against the ACSU.
In her lawsuit — filed in Rutland County Superior Court on Sept. 13, 2011 — Stearns alleges that she was bullied by Lee Sease, who was during her employment superintendent of ACSU, and then was placed on administrative leave after she complained about his behavior.
BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union School Board has approved a $10,542,068 spending plan for the 2013-2014 fiscal year that represents a 2.3 percent increase. Officials attributed the marginal increase to some creative shifting of personnel and the possible use of a reserve fund for computer equipment.
The proposed budget amounts to a $209,518 increase over the current year’s spending plan.
MIDDLEBURY — Round One didn’t disappoint.
Friday’s first 2013 matchup between two of the state’s best high school boys’ basketball teams delivered all the drama fans could hope for, as Vergennes remained undefeated by turning back Middlebury, 58-52, before the biggest crowd in the MUHS gym in a decade.
After the 14-0 Commodores sailed to an early 17-point lead, the 11-3 Tigers roared back and the second half saw seven lead changes and five ties before a Shep Carter three-pointer at 2:32 put VUHS up for good.
MIDDLEBURY — For much of Friday’s game against visiting North Country, it looked like the Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team would earn what has been an elusive win against a top-four Division II team.
The fifth-place Tigers have routinely outshot the teams above them in the standings, but have come up on the short end on the scoreboard.
BOLTON VALLEY — The Middlebury Union High School Nordic ski teams swept to victories on Jan. 29 in relay races hosted by BFA-St. Albans at the Bolton Valley Nordic Center.
The Tiger girls’ and boys’ teams each prevailed over a couple dozen teams from a half-dozen schools in a three-leg relay held on a 3-kilometer course.
