Clippings: Considering an out-of-this-world experience

Sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by all the stuff that gets thrown my way — school board stories, personality profiles,  obituaries, weddings and engagements, crime stories, gossip and hard news from Montpelier. All the nitty gritty details that make up the grubby lives we human beings endure on this patch of rock hurtling through space. Good grief! Occasionally a guy just wants get away from it all.

Now, thanks to the Dutch, I may just get to do that.

Politically Thinking: Consolidating school governance can be tricky

A committee in the seven-town, nine-school Addison Central Supervisory Union is considering whether to propose to the voters that some or all of the ACSU schools be combined into a Regional Education District or RED. The Jeffords Center, a research institute at the University of Vermont, recently completed a report for the Legislature on voluntary school district merger activity, which provides useful information on the experiences of other districts in Vermont.

Between the Lines: Finding human foibles in the police log

If you’re a regular reader of this newspaper, no doubt you have at least occasionally looked at the police logs — those summaries of the human foibles around the county.

I take a perverse comfort in reading these accounts. No matter how badly I’ve behaved on a particular day, no matter how disagreeable or inconsiderate I’ve been, it never rises to the level of the someone taking American flags from the town green. Or those people who steal license plates and use them to obscure their identities so they can pump gas and then drive off without paying.

Vermont State Police Log: Hiker finds missing snowmobile in woods

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police received a call from an Addison man this past Sunday at around 1:30 p.m. alerting them that he had found a snowmobile while walking in the woods of Chimney Point State Park in Addison. The vehicle, described as a multi-colored red, white and black Polaris 700, matched the description of the snowmobile Patrick Cyr of New Haven reported as stolen on Jan. 5.

Vergennes Police Log: Break-ins keep city police busy

VERGENNES — Vergennes police between Jan. 28 and Feb. 2 dealt with a number of new home and car break-ins around the city and also conducted a number of patrols in areas that had been hit by a number of attempted break-ins and other suspicious activity late last month.

Middlebury Police Log: Police separate arguing couple

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on Feb. 3 assisted a Court Street resident who said that her boyfriend had broken things in their apartment and had thrown himself down the stairs. The man agreed to leave the apartment and was taken by police to a relative’s home. The woman reported later that the man was texting her. Police said they found him on Court Street and took him back to his relative’s home.

Voters defeat $6.2 million VUHS bond proposals

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union voters on Tuesday resoundingly rejected a combined total of $6.2 million in bonding designed to improve the Vergennes Union High School building and athletic fields.
