BRIDPORT — Senate Health and Welfare Committee Chairwoman Claire Ayer heard an earful on Monday from local opponents of a proposed law that would allow terminally ill, mentally competent patients to take a lethal dose of medication under specific conditions.

'Car' aids in rehabilitation at Helen Porter

MIDDLEBURY — Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center (HPHRC) officials spend a lot of time helping injured patients become mobile enough to take that much-anticipated ride home. They routinely practice getting in and out of a vehicle as part of their transition to independence, though practice has at times required bundling up for parking lot visits in rain or snow.

Lincoln students reach beyond Vt. borders with exploration of India

LINCOLN — Students, parents and staff of the Lincoln Community School gathered in the building’s recently renovated gymnasium last Friday to celebrate a special month learning about the culture of India. The “India Festival” featured a shadow puppet show, a presentation of student artwork in traditional Indian styles, yoga, delicious Indian food and a magic show by local magician Tom Verner.

New county investigator will pursue assault and sex crimes

MIDDLEBURY — State and local police are getting a big assist in their investigations of domestic assault and sexual abuse cases thanks to a newly created service based in the Addison County Sheriff’s Department headquarters.

It’s called the Addison County Unit for Special Investigations, or ACUSI, and it includes a part-time investigator to help area law enforcement agencies bring to justice perpetrators of assault and sex crimes against adults and children.

Middlebury men's basketball improves to 20-1

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team swept two NESCAC road games over the weekend before defeating visiting Lyndon on Tuesday to improve to 20-1, 6-1 in league play — and set some program landmarks in the process.

The league wins kept the Panthers’ chances for a first-place finish in NESCAC alive entering the final weekend of play, but they will need some help.

Guest editorial: Will health care reform deliver true savings?

Republican legislators have taken the Shumlin administration to task for failing to articulate how the state’s health care reform law would be financed, as required by law. The administration contends it has “substantially” complied, and labels the partisan display a “stunt.”
