Official 'cultivates' idea for aid from nonprofit groups

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Planning Commission Chairwoman Nancy Malcolm realizes that most local nonprofits don’t have a lot of green in the bank. But she is hoping that representatives of those nonprofits have green thumbs to help tend to public gardens as a way of giving back to the community in return for their tax-exempt status.

Raccoon, fox suspected of rabies in Bristol

BRISTOL — Town officials in Bristol are urging residents to be on the lookout for possible rabid animals. In October, there have been two reported incidents of wild animals with rabies, Town Administrator Bill Bryant said in a statement.

In the first incident, on Oct. 3, a rabid raccoon bit a man through the boot near Hardscrabble Road. The second incident, on Oct. 21, involved a “dying but apparently rabid fox on Mountain Street,” Bryant said.

Police say evidence links Vergennes man to many home burglaries

SALISBURY — A Vergennes man who was apprehended in Salisbury for outstanding arrest warrants for drug charges in Rutland, is now suspected of being involved in a number of Addison County burglaries.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, at around 5:30 a.m., the Vermont State Police received a call regarding a suspicious vehicle and man on Smead Road in Salisbury. The caller was concerned because the residence had been burglarized in the past.

Vermont food barge lays anchor in N.Y.C.

NEW YORK CITY — The Vermont Sail Freight Project sail barge Ceres,which left Shoreham Oct. 6 loaded with Vermont agricultural products, reached its destination this past Thursday — the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Erik Andrus, who is director of the project and runs a rice and beef farm in Ferrisburgh, said the project came out of a desire to connect people and the food they consume.

Weybridge kids build bridges to the future

WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge Elementary School is taking very seriously its mission of building students a bridge to a better future.

In fact, every student in the small community school spent last week building a total of 10 bridges — not in the same vein as Middlebury’s $16 million Cross Street Bridge that can support multi-ton vehicles, but rather tiny spans made out of popsicle sticks designed to withstand at least 5 pounds of weight.

Spooky, scary, sweet activities abound this week

ADDISON COUNTY — Although many of the area’s major Halloween-themed community events were scheduled over this past weekend, a number of other activities sprinkled around the county remain to be enjoyed by residents both young and old.

One such event is specifically designed to be enjoyed by seniors. The Champlain Valley Agency on Aging has scheduled what it is calling a “Special Halloween Meal” and party at the Bridport Grange Hall on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

City to petition pipeline endorsement

VERGENNES — Vergennes officials said at the city council meeting last week that they and a petitioner against aldermen’s endorsement of the proposed Addison County extension of the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline had mutually agreed to postpone his formal presentation of that petition.

Jeff Margolis had been on the Oct. 22 agenda, but instead, aldermen will hold what they expect to be a brief special meeting in city hall at 6 p.m. this Tuesday to accept a petition.

Council sets price for sale of public land to resident

VERGENNES — At their Oct. 22 city council meeting, Vergennes aldermen agreed with South Water Street homeowner Didier Murat on the sale terms for a city-owned strip of land that bisects his property that is technically an extension of Victory Street. City officials said the strip, almost exactly 0.25 acre, is now lawn and has not been publicly used for decades, possibly a century or more.
