VERGENNES — Facing a fiscal crisis that Bixby Free Memorial Library board members believe could bankrupt the Vergennes fixture in a few short years, those board members this winter approached the five communities the library serves seeking a major boost in the support it receives within town budgets.
Bixby board members said they understood why responses from local selectboards were mixed when the Bixby initially asked for an increase in support from $13.66 per resident to about $24.
MONKTON — After weeks of heated dispute between Vermont Gas Systems and Monkton town officials over the path of a proposed natural gas pipeline, the parties involved may be nearing a compromise — though not all residents are satisfied.
ADDISON COUNTY — “Hide,” a new documentary film made by two Middlebury College students, takes viewers behind the scenes of Addison County’s picturesque landscape. It follows eight anonymous migrant workers laboring unseen in unnamed Vermont dairy farms and exposes the struggles of their daily lives, for the first time, to larger audiences.
VERGENNES — While the Bixby Free Memorial Library board works with the five communities the Vergennes institution serves to ensure the Bixby’s financial future (see related story), its librarians and director say they are trying to make sure the library will continue to be an important part of residents’ lives.
Director Jane Spencer said steps have already been taken, including hiring new head librarian MacKenzie Ross, moving former head librarian Rachel Plant to the position of children’s librarian, and juggling staff hours.
NEW HAVEN — Meg Barnes of Shoreham will present photos and give a talk about her travels in Singapore at the New Haven Community Library’s Armchair Traveler series on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m.
Singapore is an Asian city-state located off the Malay peninsula 85 miles north of the equator. It is a bustling city that was formerly a part of the British Empire.
Among the photos are images of a fantastic casino and restaurant perched atop three towers, as well as views of a city skyline filled with skyscrapers.
WEYBRIDGE — The embezzlement case against former Weybridge Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson will be adjudicated in U.S. District Court, as opposed to through the state judicial system.
That news was confirmed on Thursday by Weybridge officials and Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Waples, who will prosecute the case against Brisson.
VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School is moving toward a system that will require students to demonstrate mastery of a series of skills, known as “Performance Based Graduation Requirements,” in order to earn a diploma.
MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union directors and teachers have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract to cover the 2013-14 academic year. Terms of the deal will be made public once it is formally ratified by ACSU teachers and the nine separate school boards that govern the district.
