MIDDLEBURY — Entrepreneur Paul Ralston has always had a burning desire to try his hand at businesses that depend on fire. To wit, heat has been an essential ingredient at the Bristol Bakery (which he founded) and at his current, growing venture, the Vermont Coffee Company, where the roasting of beans exudes an intoxicating aroma at its headquarters on Middlebury’s Exchange Street.

BRISTOL — Before the Mount Abraham Union High School boys’ soccer team’s Saturday morning home game, the players, parents, fans, school officials and family members of the late Levi Duclos watched as a plaque in the 2009 Mount Abe captain’s memory was unveiled on the home team’s bench.
Mount Abe coach Mike Corey spoke about Duclos, a standout player and team leader who perished in a tragic hiking incident this past winter.
His speech, which includes the plaque’s inscription, went as follows:
MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury should consider making at least one exception to its current ban on retail establishments of more than 50,000 square feet in order to woo an anchor store to Addison County’s shire town, according to at least some of the roughly two-dozen people at a Sept. 18 hearing on the proposed new Middlebury town plan.

Talk about rich with irony. There’s Republican Mitt Romney denigrating 47 percent of Americans for not paying their fair share of taxes. He’s the multi-millionaire, after all, who refuses to release his income taxes over the past several years because all bets are that those reports will show he dodges hundreds of thousands in annual tax payments available to the super wealthy. Romney admits that he limits his tax liability to 10-13 percent annually — far less than the 35 percent most people in his income bracket pay.
