Today’s Internet is increasingly carrying articles from both American and foreign sources to the effect that Israel is pulling out the stops trying to get the United States involved in military action against Iran.
Y’know, it’s already harder and harder to get excited about each new NFL season as more information steadily comes out about how inherently dangerous the sport, notably at the professional level, is to the human brain.
And now we have the owner-imposed referee lockout to dampen enthusiasm even further.
It’s really difficult to root for a sport that is owned and operated by some of the meanest people who walk the face of the earth.
SPRINGFIELD — The Otter Valley Union High School football team on Aug. 31 rolled to a 35-6 halftime lead on the way to a 48-6 win over host Springfield in both teams’ Division II opener.
The Otters took the lead when sophomore QB John Winslow hit senior Brett Patterson with a 43-yard touchdown pass.
A bad snap on a punt gave the Otters two more points, and OV took the kick and marched to score on a 5-yard run by Cody Gutzman.

BRISTOL —Rockydale Pizza’s new owners just gave a facelift to the restaurant on Rockydale Road east of Bristol village.
Co-owners David Steadman and Carla Nichols, who took the reins four weeks ago, have put in a new kitchen, updated the menu and increased their hours of service.
No changes have been made to the pizza recipes, which are old community favorites, Steadman said. But the updated menu includes some tasty new features, including homemade daily specials like stuffed green peppers, barbeque ribs and pulled pork.
BRANDON — One man is dead and another remains hospitalized after the first human cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in Vermont were detected in Brandon and Whiting on Saturday, and state officials are on the offensive.
Richard Hollis Breen, 87, of Brandon died Tuesday from the disease and a man from Sudbury remains hospitalized on Wednesday. Breen lived on the emu farm in Brandon where at least 16 emus died from the disease last September when EEE was for the first time detected in animals in the state.
MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County (UWAC) officials will launch the 2012 fundraising campaign on Sept. 20 with what they believe is a more realistic financial goal and an impending change in its administrative leadership.
Editor’s note: One of the prizes for participants in this summer’s Dream Big Summer Reading Program at Ilsley Public Library was the opportunity to work with the editor on a story for the Addison Independent. Seven-year-old Arianna Graham-Gurland, who just started second grade with Mrs. Doyle at Mary Hogan Elementary School in Middlebury, was the top reader in the Grade 1-3 category tallying 160 titles this past summer. Here she tells about some of the books she liked best.
