VERMONT — Amidst the thick muck and agricultural destruction at the University of Vermont’s Borderview Farm in Alburgh last September, walked a seemingly unlikely pair: UVM agronomist Heather Darby and Bobcat Café and Brewery brew master Mark Magiera.
For several years, the two have been studying hops together. And as they strolled through the UVM hop, barley and wheat farm, they couldn’t help but think about the many farmers who were reeling from the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Irene.
MIDDLEBURY — The Counseling Service of Addison County (CSAC) has assembled a new program that will assist police across the county in dealing with complaints involving people who are emotionally distraught or suffering from mental illness.
ADDISON COUNTY — Between golden rays of early morning light last Wednesday, three volunteers for the Addison County Riverwatch Collaborative weaved through patches of poison parsnip along the Lemon Fair River. Middlebury College professor Kathy Morse, Cornwall’s David Anderson and Starksboro’s Matt Witten were taking samples and running various tests to monitor the Otter Creek tributary’s health.
NEW HAVEN –– A line of farmers waded through waist-high wheat in a New Haven field last Thursday, looking closely at the plants, determining if it could be harvested soon and asking questions about everything from the effects of dry and wet weather to the types of wheat that are doing the best this year.
MIDDLEBURY — It may be summer vacation, but 30 students will be traveling halfway around the world to attend classes at Middlebury Union High School later this month.
Those students will be coming from the cities of Chongchiang and Guizhou in southern China, through a program coordinated by Burlington-based SPIRAL International. Founded in 2010, SPIRAL International is a non-profit educational organization that promotes inter-cultural learning, understanding and relationships through international student placement services and exchange programs.
VERGENNES — Visiting Racquet’s Edge outpaced the Vergennes Champs, 269-214, in Champlain Valley Swim League action on Thursday.
Tucker Stearns won three races for the home team, while Allison Croke, Katrina Mayer and Matteo Palmer picked up two victories apiece for the Champs.
The Champs also won eight relays, sweeping the 10-and-under and 18-and-under boys’ and girls’ races.

ADDISON COUNTY — The end of June brought to a close the e-Vermont Community Broadband Project, a venture that for the past two years has distributed grants to Vermont towns for digital tools and training to use the Internet to create jobs and spur innovation in schools.
But as the project wraps up, Vermont communities have begun sharing stories on how they can maintain and build wireless Internet access despite the loss of e-Vermont.
