Amidst a riot of perennial blooms such as I have never seen in my backyard gardens, the peas are finished, the green beans are producing more than we can eat, tomatoes are ripening quickly, zucchini plants are covered with blossoms (though no fruit — not enough pollinators?), sorrel and spinach have gone to seed, carrots are long and tasty. And I have had to water; we need a good soaking rain.

SHOREHAM — Two adults sustained injuries — one requiring airlift transport to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. — but an infant was miraculously unhurt in a severe three-car crash on Route 74 in Shoreham on Thursday.
Vermont State Police responded to the crash at around 8:30 a.m. on Route 74 in eastern Shoreham, near Tottingham Road.
We just returned from a week of camping in Salisbury. This year, for the first time, it actually resembled the sort of positive experience most people associate with vacations.
We don’t go away very often, what with my husband being self-employed and us having a large garden and various sorts of farm-type animals, most of whom have special issues (pet sitters generally aren’t willing to rub a goat’s temples to ease her migraines).
If you had two products of comparable quality and one cost $120,000 and the other $20,000, the choice between the two would be simple. If the $20,000 option were considerably better, then not only would the choice be easy, but the $120,000 option would cease to exist.
To a degree, that describes the horns of the dilemma to be encountered by higher education. No matter how they respond, the cost of a college education and the explosion in digital learning models will revamp the way the next generation approaches education.
ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police were called to a home on Elm Point Road in Addison on Monday, July 9, to investigate a reported burglary.
The resident reported that three 1950s antique pedal cars were stolen from the basement of the residence.
Troopers are investigating, but initially said they had no suspects.
Anyone with information on this theft is asked to contact the New Haven state police barracks at 802-388-4919.

VERGENNES — Vergennes police on July 3 arrested a 23-year-old Brandon man for allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old Vergennes resident who was on the way to the city’s annual Independence Day fireworks display and stealing his wallet.
Police allege Michael D. Shively of Champearl Road sometime before 9:30 p.m. grabbed the teen from a North Main Street sidewalk, pulled him into some bushes, assaulted him by punching him in the ribs and ripping his shirt, and took the wallet.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Martina Anderson, 25, of Warren for retail theft at Carolyn’s Closet on Main Street on July 6. Anderson admitted to stealing merchandise from several downtown stores, according to police.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Investigated the reported theft of an iPhone from a Seminary Street residence on July 2.
• Responded to the reported theft of a wallet from a person at Shaw’s Supermarket on Washington Street on July 2. Police said the thief returned the wallet.
