Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Andrew Stein

BRISTOL — For almost two years, Addison Northeast Supervisory Union (ANeSU) teachers have been working without a collective bargaining agreement. Representatives from the ANeSU teachers’ union are hoping to reach an agreement on Monday and shed the imposed conditions that they’ve been working under since January 2011.

The negotiations, slated for Monday, will be held behind closed doors in executive session.

ORWELL — In the 36 years since Sally (Gilmore) DeLancey, 57, first set foot in the Orwell Village School to start work as a kindergarten teacher, a lot has changed.

Locals weigh in on Middlebury town plan

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Planning Commission on Monday held its first of two public hearings on a draft of the revised town plan, a lengthy document that will be open to further changes based on community input during the coming months.

The state requires Vermont communities to update their town plans — blueprints for how municipalities see themselves currently and how they would like to grow in the future — every five years.

MIDDLEBURY — This summer, those looking for art won’t find it at the Middlebury College Museum of Art.

The museum’s sprinkler and plumbing system is undergoing significant repair work, which began in May and will continue until August, said Douglas Perkins, operations manager for the museum.

The museum, which is housed in the Mahaney Center for the Arts, will reopen Sept. 4, and the main exhibit for the fall, “China Modern,” will go up Sept. 13.

HINESBURG/FERRISBURGH — There’s a new brand of organic milk hitting the shelves in stores around Vermont from a Ferrisburgh farm that after years producing high-quality milk is now also bottling it and sending it to retailers.

Kimball Brook Farm has been milking 200 Jersey and Holstein cows and selling to the national market for 15 years. But when Cheryl and J.D. DeVos flipped the switch at their small Hinesburg bottling plant on May 17, they were marking a major transition to processor and distributor of their own milk.

Editorial: Disney, Bloomberg are ahead of the times on era's health issue

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

If you’ve been reading the news this week, you’d know the connection between the Walt Disney Company recent action and one proposed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The former will banish junk-food advertising from its television shows for kids, and the latter is considering a plan to ban oversized sugary drinks. Both are addressing the obesity epidemic that is sweeping the nation.

And with good cause.

Clippings: Darn that government. Or not...

Posted on June 7, 2012 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

A few years back at an Addison forum devoted to whether the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union should unite under one-board governance, a resident asked rhetorically whether bigger government ever made things better.

Never mind school unification: Given more recent history, that question now looks a little ironic.

After all, the town of Addison and local residents and businesses just happily spent money to celebrate the opening of the new $70 million bridge across Lake Champlain.
