MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police launched an investigation into the reported sexual assault of a local woman on Feb. 5. Police received the report from the Porter Hospital emergency room, where the victim had gone for treatment.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Responded to a domestic violence report at a Benedict Lane residence on Jan. 30. Police arrested Matthew A. Cooke, 20, of Middlebury on a mittimus warrant from Vermont Department of Corrections and took him to court.
I’m not the dyed-in-the-wool football fan I used to be.
But I tuned in Sunday to watch the New York Giants snatch the momentum away from the New England Patriots late in the second half, and saw Eli Manning march his team down to a sure winning field goal and accidentally stumble in for the winning touchdown instead.
ADDISON COUNTY — On Friday, Feb. 3, at around 9:30 p.m. Vermont State Police received a 911 call from a man who claimed to be a resident of Hancock. The man gave his name, said he was going to kill his mother and hung up.
Troopers responded to the last known address of the alleged caller in Hancock and through investigation determined that the person who called 911 was not the person the caller claimed to be.
So it’s winter, and you can’t get your fix of fishing. This is a problem for Vermont anglers every winter, but this year it’s particularly acute because all the outdoor things you do in the winter when you can’t fish require snow. And, as you may have noticed, there isn’t any. Not only is there no snow, but as I write this column it is 46 degrees outside and the long-range forecast offers no promise of significant snowfall in the next 10 days.
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team took a step forward on Monday, when the host Commodores twice rallied to pin a 46-42 setback on a Harwood team that had earlier handed them a 13-point loss.
VUHS trailed by 11 in the first half and eight in the third quarter before rallying to lead after three, 36-34. Then, with their leading scorer on the bench with five fouls, the Commodores erased a 42-38 deficit with an 8-0 run over the final 2:50.
MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury has asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to dismiss Middlebury Electric LLC’s (ME) draft license application for a small hydroelectric plant at the Otter Creek falls until ME has had more interaction with the town on its proposal.
The request is contained in a Feb. 3 letter and brief submitted to FERC Secretary Kimberly Bose by attorney Matthew Manahan, a Portland, Maine, attorney the Middlebury selectboard has hired to represent the town’s interests.

BRISTOL — Vermont State Police on Monday evening cited Vergennes Union High School Co-Principal Edwin Webbley for driving under the influence of alcohol, an action taken after VSP received a call from his wife at their Bristol home and were told Webbley’s car had struck the back of their garage.
According to a VSP press release, Webbley’s wife, Carrie Askren, told VSP at about 6:50 p.m. on Monday that Webbley was “intoxicated and that he was a danger to himself and others.”

MONTPELIER — Vermont lawmakers are working on legislation that aims to bolster Vermont’s economy while retaining the hallmarks of its rural landscape.
The main focus in both the House and Senate agriculture committees so far this session has been the Working Lands Enterprise Bill, which seeks to bolster the agriculture, forestry and value-added food processing business sectors in the state.
