Suppose that an investor you admire and trust comes to you with an investment idea. “This is a good one,” he says enthusiastically. “I’m in it, and I think you should be, too.”
It is usually a good idea to listen to your mom. Back in the ’60s and ’70s my mom was a very active volunteer with the Duluth Symphony. As an accomplished pianist and organist she was eager to keep at least one toe in the world of music while the rest of her was busy raising me and my brother and sister. She served on the symphony board and a few times a year she and my dad would break out their season tickets, get dressed up and head out for an evening of high culture. My brother and I would stay home and wreak havoc.
The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in the spring in two same-sex marriage cases. The first involves the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, the referendum that overturned a California Supreme Court decision making same-sex marriages legal in that state. The second, which could have significant implications for Vermont, involves the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, the 1996 federal statute that defines marriage in terms of federal law as the legal union of one man and one woman.
Is Christmas a Christian holiday?
Maybe the people who keep urging us to put the Christ back in Christmas have a point. At a time when a growing number of Americans identify with no religious institution, we’ve lost much of the holiday’s religious value.
But many historians believe the historical Jesus was born in the spring. The timing and some of the rituals of modern-day Christmas (e.g., the tree hauled in from the forest) appropriate pagan, solstice celebrations for the purposes of the dominant religious paradigm of our time.
VERGENNES — Vergennes police recently cited two city residents for supplying drugs and alcohol to a juvenile Vergennes resident following an investigation that began on Nov. 29, when the juvenile’s mother complained to police that he had come home under the influence of substances.
Police said their investigation led to a Dec. 3 citation to Carol Englehardt, 46, of Vergennes for allegedly delivering a drug to a minor. Police allege the drug in question was Klonopin, an anti-seizure medication, and that the juvenile had snorted it in powder form.
ADDISON COUNTY — On Dec. 7 at around 1:30 p.m. Vermont State Police in New Haven responded to the report of an abuse prevention order violation in Ripton.
As a result of their investigation, troopers arrested Brian Booska, 37, of Middlebury for violating an abuse prevention order. He was lodged at the Chittenden County Correctional Center for lack of $10,000 bail.
Separately, a New Haven woman was jailed last Friday as the result of allegedly engaging in two assaults, as well as having contact with a man with whom she is legally barred from contacting.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police helped reunite a disoriented elderly woman with her family on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Police said a passerby brought the woman into the Middlebury Inn after she had allegedly stepped in front of a car. The woman’s status was confirmed a short time later when authorities received a 911 call from a woman who reported her elderly mother was missing. A family member came in to collect the woman.
