Guest editorial: Gov. Shumlin faces key decision on education

To Mr. Shumlin:

If we could add 25 million post-secondary educated students to the workforce by 2025, the boost to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product would be $500 billion annually, according to a Georgetown University study.

If you do the math, Vermont’s tiny sliver of that increase would be roughly a billion dollars annually and that billion dollars translates directly to the economic and cultural security we need to pursue for the next generation of Vermonters.

Sportswriters pick three as state's top athletes

VERMONT — The Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has chose Burr & Burton Academy quarterback Jake Stalcup, Lake Region Union High School girls’ soccer striker Tyrah Urie, and Norwich University women’s rugby player Rose Bernheim as its September athletes of the month.

In a statewide vote of VSSA members, Stalcup became the Male High School Athlete of the Month, Urie was elected as the Female High School Athlete of the Month, and Bernheim was picked as the Open Division Athlete of the Month.

Cool weather brings knitting back to Bristol's Lawrence Library

BRISTOL — With the changing seasons comes the return of knitting at the Lawrence Memorial Library at 40 North St. in Bristol. Whether you want to get a jump start on holiday gifts, make a warm scarf and a hat for yourself, or are just learning, now is a great time to start knitting again. Join your fellow adult crafters downstairs at the library on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. For more information contact Paulita Washburn, young adult librarian, at 453-2366.

Troopers investigate Bridport burglaries

BRIDPORT — Vermont State Police are investigating two burglaries reported off Route 125 in Bridport on Thursday, Nov. 15.

In one case, the culprit(s) forced open a rear door at the residence to get in and steal approximately $1,000 in jewelry. The thieves also initially broke a window in an unsuccessful attempt to get into the home. Damage to the door and window of the home is estimated at around $500.

Debate hits fever pitch on Middlebury retail store cap

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday got another earful from area residents about the newly revised town plan, specifically about whether the document should include language limiting retail store size to 50,000 square feet.

The planning commission has recommended such language to mirror a 50,000-square-foot cap that has been included in Middlebury’s zoning ordinances since 2005.

Weybridge town clerk admits to embezzlement

WEYBRIDGE — Longtime Weybridge Town Clerk and Treasurer Karen Brisson on Monday resigned from her job after admitting to the local selectboard that she had been embezzling town funds during the past several years, an amount that the town’s attorney said could range between $100,000 and $150,000, according to preliminary estimates.
