MIDDLEBURY — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team continued its revival season on Saturday, when the Eagles fought off a challenge from a shorthanded host Middlebury team and won, 2-0.
The Eagles improved to 7-2-1 and look to be in good shape for a top-four seed in Division II with both the semifinals and final to be played on neutral, artificial-turf fields.
MIDDLEBURY — Visiting BFA-St. Albans earned a 21-3 victory over the Middlebury Union High School football team on Friday by having two backs rush for more than 100 yards, tackling well and recovering three of the six Tiger fumbles.
The Bobwhites improved to 5-1 in Division I and overall, good for a second-place tie with Essex behind undefeated Hartford, while the Tigers dropped to 3-3 overall, 2-3 in D-I. That league mark leaves them in an eighth-place tie with Burlington with two D-I games to go: at Colchester on Friday and vs. Champlain Valley on Oct. 19 at home.
You have to hand it to Mitt Romney in that first debate: his logic was impeccable.
It went something like this: “No, Mr. President, you can’t say my tax cut proposals will create a $5 trillion national deficit over 10 years or that I’ll have to increase taxes on the middle class and slash important benefits to them, if I now say that I won’t let that happen.
“And I‘m saying now that I won’t raise taxes on the middle class and I won’t pass tax cuts that will increase the deficit.”

MIDDLEBURY — After a six-hour standoff, a Middlebury man with a history of threatening others died on Thursday evening during a firefight with local police in the woods off Case Street.
George Demarais, 57, died after he allegedly goaded authorities to shoot him.
MIDDLEBURY — Ownership of Beau Ties Ltd. of Vermont changed hands last week as the existing ownership group including principal shareholders Bill Kenerson and Deb Venman sold the assets of the company to a group led by David Kramer and David Mutter.
The company will remain in Middlebury and plans call for added investment in equipment and marketing with the hopes of creating significant job growth in the area.

MIDDLEBURY — Preparations are under way at Middlebury College for the arrival of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of millions of Tibetan Buddhists and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, who will mark his third visit to Addison County on the weekend of Oct. 12.
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board on Tuesday made final its decision to ask voters on Nov. 6 for approval of a $6.5 million bond to fund major repairs and upgrades to the school’s building and site.
Board members said limited feedback since their initial Sept. 25 decision to ask for the project has been largely favorable.
“It’s been more positive than negative,” said board chairwoman Kristin Bristow.
MIDDLEBURY — Caleb Daniloff spent more than a decade of his life running away from sobriety.
He is now using the sport of running as a means of maintaining his sobriety, clearing his mind and pushing his now-healthy body to endurance levels he could never have imagined during his days of binge drinking.
