Tomato season is finally here. The red (yellow, orange, if not mottled green), juicy, oozing with vitamin C, sweet but slightly acid pungent fruit is in season. And it is a fruit, not a vegetable. We just call it a vegetable.
ADDISON COUNTY — A Ferrisburgh man landed in jail last Saturday after Vermont State Police cited him for domestic assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Trooper Dempsey reported that on July 30 at about 8:30 p.m. Vergennes police conducted a motor vehicle stop that led to the discovery of a domestic assault that took place on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh. Dempsey alleged that investigation by VSP revealed that John Whiter, 32, of Ferrisburgh kicked his six month pregnant girlfriend in the head, causing her to lose consciousness and fall on the ground.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Omar O. Jones, 23, of Middlebury for violation of an abuse prevention order, resisting arrest, and unlawful mischief, following an incident in The Centre parking lot of Route 7 South on July 28.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Were informed of the theft of two full gas cans from a Maple Court residence on July 26.
• Cited Alan N. White, 30, of Middlebury for domestic assault following an alleged incident in the Lower Foote Street area on July 26.
VERGENNES — A Vergennes traffic stop resulted in the arrest of two Ferrisburgh residents on Saturday night.
At about 11 p.m. that evening Vergennes police pulled over a car that proved to have an unlicensed driver, and police ended up driving the operator to his home on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh.
When they arrived, police said a woman came out and accused the man of assaulting her. Vergennes police then called Vermont State Police, who have jurisdiction in Ferrisburgh, and VSP arrested the man, whom they identified as John Whitier, 32.

My 47th birthday was a couple Sundays ago. I didn’t have particularly high expectations for a grand day; after a certain age one never does. Sure, I’d get to spend quality time with my family, in particular my sister-in-law during her once-a-year visit from far away. She and her kids were renting a place on Lake Dunmore, which would be a nice place to pass a hot day.
ESSEX — Vergennes Champ and Middlebury Panther swimmers combined to win five Champlain Valley Swim League titles at this past weekend’s championship meet, which was held this past Friday and Saturday at the Essex town pool.
Grace LeBeau, 8, of Vergennes won two races; sisters Reubie and Annie Bolton of Middlebury, 13 and 10, respectively, won one event apiece; and Kess Moulton, 12, of Middlebury, also won one race.
NEW HAVEN — The 63rd Addison County Fair & Field Days is set to kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with a host of new entertainers and events joining the long list of activities returning from years past.
This year, the Vermont state animal — the Morgan horse — will be featured in the Morgan Horse Extravaganza, to be held on Wednesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Donald C. Hunt Horse Arena. There will be 18 Morgan horses on hand to demonstrate the many talents of the breed.
Attorney General William Sorrell has not faced a competitive election in his 14 years in office. In 1997, former Gov. Howard Dean nominated Attorney General Jeffrey Amestoy to become Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court. At the same time, Dean appointed Sorrell, his administration secretary, to succeed Amestoy. In each of the seven elections from 1998 through 2010, Sorrell was re-elected without a serious contest.
