On Tuesday night the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 19 innings. On Wednesday morning I saw a replay of the game-winning run, scored by Julio Lugo.
It was a run that shouldn’t have counted, as video replays and photographs show Pirates catcher Michael McKenry tagging Lugo well before he reached home plate. But the ump blew the call, and the Braves won. And that of course once again brought up cries from fans as well as players and managers for an increased use of instant replay in baseball.

Paris is a famous city in France. It is famous for its old churches, chic shops, cafes and museums, and world-class piles of pigeon droppings.
While there are now very few actual Parisians who live in the city — the entire metropolis having been overrun by tourists — those who remain are no longer as irredeemably arrogant as they once were.
MIDDLEBURY — Patricia J. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) teachers will return to work this fall with the security of a new, three-year contract that requires them to pay a greater proportion of their health care premiums but assures them some modest wage increases.
VERMONT — Soaring temperatures swept across New England last week scorching Addison County, Vermont and the entire six-state region.
While thermometers were reporting temperatures way above normal, other meters also gave unusually high readings: Electricity demand in the region was just shy of record.
PANTON — Panton selectmen on Tuesday called for a special meeting on this Thursday, the 28th, at which they expect to set the town’s 2011-12 tax rate and hope to set a date for another special meeting — that one a town-wide gathering to decide the fate of the cupola atop Panton Town Hall.
The tax rate might be an easier issue at the Thursday meeting set to begin at 7 p.m., although the result could be a bit painful, said selectboard chairman John Viskup.
FERRISBURGH — Vermont State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard recovered the body of a Ferrisburgh man from Lake Champlain on Tuesday afternoon, concluding a three-day search for the drowning victim.
Vermont State Police said at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday Rene Viau, a 46-year-old married father of two and employee of Vermont Heating and Ventilation in Winooski, was riding in the bow of a 16-foot aluminum boat near Kellogg and Porter bays when he fell out and did not resurface.
MIDDLEBURY — The Rev. Elisabeth Smith’s lengthy pastoral career has taken her to churches stretching from South Carolina to Massachusetts.
She is now preaching the Gospel in Vermont, as the new pastor at the Middlebury United Methodist Church (MUMC).
Smith, 50, officially began her new duties July 3. She replaces the Rev. Jill Colley Robinson, who recently took over leadership of the Lebanon (N.H.) United Methodist Church after eight years with the MUMC.
