The 2011 Vermont Cheesemakers' Festival drew crowds of people to Shelburne Farms last Sunday, July 24. We were there to check in with the many Addison County producers, and (of course!) to enjoy the food.

Yesterday the wind blew hot and surly across the tall field grasses. Today the high dog days of midsummer have pooled around my feet. It is still but for the drone of heat-loving insects and the intermittent warning of a robin, the hissing of a house wren, the drink-your-tea-tea-tea call of the Eastern towhee.
I like to party.

CASTLETON — With two losses in three outings, the Addison County American Legion baseball team bowed out of this past weekend’s double-elimination Vermont Legion championship tournament at Castleton State College.
AC, the Northern Division’s No. 4 seed, rallied on Saturday for a win in its second game, 9-6, over Southern No. 3 Lakes Region, but that victory was bookended by an opening loss on Friday to Southern No. 1 Bennington, 8-0, and in a Sunday elimination contest to Northern No. 1 Essex, 4-1.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department’s quest to upgrade its two fire stations passed two major hurdles early this week, as the town’s development review board gave a thumbs-up to the $4.875 million plan and the selectboard set Sept. 27 as the first of two community-wide votes on the project.
The project, if ultimately approved by voters on Town Meeting Day, would add 8,100 square feet of space onto the southern end of the Seymour Street fire station, in the form of a single-story, four-bay addition.
They say you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. I learned that the hard way this morning when I visited a popular online retailer and found out it had discontinued my favorite jeans. If your windows were open around 7:30, you may have heard my cries of anguish.
When I say “favorite” jeans, I don’t mean I actually loved them. I mean that, among the myriad brands I’ve tried, these were the least unflattering to my figure. That is, sadly, the closest most women ever get to the ideal pair of jeans.
On Tuesday night the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 19 innings. On Wednesday morning I saw a replay of the game-winning run, scored by Julio Lugo.
It was a run that shouldn’t have counted, as video replays and photographs show Pirates catcher Michael McKenry tagging Lugo well before he reached home plate. But the ump blew the call, and the Braves won. And that of course once again brought up cries from fans as well as players and managers for an increased use of instant replay in baseball.
