On the Ball: Seeds are planted
That time of the year is here, where postseasons overlap and local fans have a full menu of options. Well, almost full — the Middlebury College men’s hockey team lost in the NESCAC quarterfinal round on Saturday, its earliest exit ever.
MONTPELIER — A recent flurry of enthusiasm for small, diversified farming operations in the state has left some farmers feeling left out in the cold.
That was the main message a group of Addison County farmers gave to legislators when they traveled to the Statehouse last Wednesday.
ADDISON — The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has agreed to give Flatiron Construction a 65-day schedule adjustment in which to complete the new Champlain Bridge in view of harsh winter weather and underwater debris that have hampered work progress.
But officials said on Friday they are confident that Flatiron will still be able to get the new bridge completed by the previously targeted deadline of Oct. 9, and the NYSDOT is considering marshalling additional equipment at added expense to help expedite work.
ADDISON — Addison planners on Feb. 21 agreed to recommend to selectmen that changes to town zoning made last summer be reversed, at least until the planning commission goes over them again and warns them publicly.
Planners also said the changes made to setbacks and waiver procedures late last summer and early last fall reflected their work and intent, and were not, as some citizens had alleged, made by selectboard chairman Jeff Kauffman, then the zoning administrator.
ORWELL — At Tuesday’s town meeting in Orwell, voters will decide how to pay off legal fees of $128,316 from a town zoning lawsuit that began in 2007.
In January the Vermont Supreme Court ruled against the town in a case over Orwell zoning bylaws. Although the town does was not assessed damages, it does have to pay legal fees in the case.
MIDDLEBURY – The Middlebury College men’s hockey season came to its earliest end since 1994 on Saturday, when sixth-seeded Colby upset the No. 3 Panthers, 2-1, in a NESCAC quarterfinal.
The loss meant for the first time in the 11-year history of the NESCAC tournament the 11-8-6 Panthers will not reach the final. And for only the second time since 1995, when NESCAC teams first became eligible for the NCAA Division III tournament, the Panthers will not be going.
PANTON — Panton residents on Thursday will have a chance to learn more about and weigh in on amendments and updates to the town’s plan, which was last adopted in 2005.
The hearing on the changes to the document, which, including about a dozen pages of maps, comes in at roughly 90 pages, will begin at Panton Town Hall at 7 p.m.
