One of my good friends owns only a wrench, a turtle and a dinosaur. Another close pal has a few dolphins, a suitcase and some sunglasses. Though this might sound impressive in the real world, in the world of Silly Bandz this is nothing. The 7-year-old son of a friend, for instance, just got a pack of no less than 150 of the neon-colored, silicon wristbands that take on the outline of nearly every object under the sun and then some.
ST. JOHNSBURY — The Middlebury 10- and 11-year-old Little League all-star baseball team won twice this past weekend in St. Johnsbury — once in dramatic, extra-inning fashion — to advance to the championship game of the Vermont tournament.
District I champion Middlebury will play next on Friday at 6 p.m., again in St. Johnsbury, against the winner of the Wednesday evening losers’ bracket final between St. Johnsbury and Brattleboro.
BRANDON — New England Woodcraft has bought the former Neo EMS (Nexus) building on Mount Pleasant in Brandon.
Jeff Thurston of New England Woodcraft confirmed the sale on July 19. According to the new deed and property transfer papers filed with the Brandon town clerk, the Forest Dale-based company bought the 33,000-square-foot building at the corner of Prospect and Cedar streets for $340,000. The 2008-2009 assessed value of the property, which includes 5.7 acres of land, was $863,000.
Flowers occupy an uneasy space in many vegetable and herb gardens. Sure, we grow them for their good looks and scent, to relieve the eye from all that green. Mostly, though, we’re trying either to forestall the flowering event in vegetables and herbs — if what we harvest from a plant is leaf or stem rather than fruit or seed — or to usher the plant safely through the flowering stage and on to the point — the fruit. But what about eating and drinking the blossoms themselves? Or the seeds?
Sunflowers and popcorn we grow for seeds, sure.
