MIDDLEBURY — Addison County Transit Resources (ACTR) officials hope to soon start drawing down an already-secured $2.85 million federal grant and move toward building a new headquarters on Creek Road, and in the meantime they’ve applied for an additional $1 million to make the facility as energy efficient as possible.
BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard is considering what to do with the recently closed South Street Bridge, which the town shut down last week because of safety concerns.
At a meeting of the board Monday night, town administrator Bill Bryant outlined three options the town could adopt to reopen the span.
Gov. Jim Douglas has said little about his plans after his term ends in January, other than that he wants to stay in Vermont. One of Vermont’s leading business positions will come open next year, and it is one for which Douglas could be a strong candidate. Bob Young, president of Central Vermont Public Service, recently announced that he will retire next spring. Board members of the state’s largest utility might well want to talk with Douglas about his becoming CEO of CVPS in 2011.
Twenty-two-year-old Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg is a genuine phenom, whose arrival in baseball has come this summer with unmatched ballyhoo.
His highly anticipated first game this year in the majors on June 8 at Nationals Stadium was a debut beyond expectation: Strasburg struck out 14 batters in seven innings before a sell-out crowd of 40,315, leading the Nats to a 5-2 win over the Pirates.
NEW HAVEN — The already action-packed Addison County Fair & Field Days schedule will get even more lively this year with new animal showcases, entertainment options and a gubernatorial candidates’ debate.
FERRISBURGH — Despite sweltering heat, Ferrisburgh residents turned out in force on July 24 for “Ferrisburgh Day,” a community celebration that included free daytime events at nine locations around town and an evening church supper.
MIDDLEBURY — It would be an understatement to say that the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) has been through a sea of change since Director Lynn Coale took the helm eight years ago.
During that time, the PHCC has established a new $3.7 million “North Campus” building in Middlebury’s industrial park; expanded its course offerings and enrollment; and completed the transition to self-governance from having been previously managed by the UD-3 school board.
FERRISBURGH — When he was 16, Mike Capra, then a Cornwall resident and Middlebury Union High School student, went to work for Miller Chevrolet on North Main Street in Vergennes.
Among those he called boss those 29 years ago were dealership owner Howard Miller and manager Robert “Cappy” Capra — whom Mike Capra also called Dad.
