MIDDLEBURY — The Aug. 24 primary provided a lot of fireworks, but Addison County saw arguably its biggest political bombshell detonate two days after the election.

Rep. Steve Maier, D-Middlebury, officially withdrew from the Nov. 2 general election ballot on Thursday, thereby giving the Middlebury Democratic Committee seven days in which to pick someone to run in his stead.

MIDDLEBURY — People visiting the Frank Mahady Courthouse in Middlebury will soon notice some subtle changes in how Addison County’s court system is organized and conducts business.

And eventually, people will notice some big changes — including the ability to file their complaints electronically and potentially see court offices consolidated within a single floor of the 40,000-square-foot courthouse building.

STARKSBORO — Last Thursday afternoon, children climbed hay bales at the back of the airy, open barn at Sentinel Farms, nestled in the Starksboro hills.

Kerry Kurt hurried from the barn past a nearby bright red sign reading, “Horse n Rebel Market, Gallery and Grille” and into her new store to check on a couple of customers. She waved to each car that passed on Route 116, and greeted her customers by name.

CORNWALL — Construction crews have been busy preparing a temporary span on which to divert Route 125 traffic during the upcoming replacement of the Lemon Fair Bridge in Cornwall.

“We’re within a week or two of shipping traffic over the temporary bridge, then we will work on the new bridge,” Vermont Agency of Transportation resident Engineer Joe Knipes said late last week.

Recount’s fine, but keep it rollin’

With gubernatorial candidate Peter Shumlin picking up five votes in the unofficial vote canvassing by the Secretary of State’s office as of late Friday afternoon, he now leads Doug Racine in the Democratic primary race by 197 votes. Still, it is a thin margin and by no means a done deal considering the potential for errors.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard is considering an interim zoning change that would open the door to more business development near the east end of the soon-to-be completed Cross Street Bridge.

The board is tentatively set to hold a public hearing on Sept. 28 to receive feedback on the plan, which calls for zoning for properties fronting Cross and South Pleasant streets to be changed from “office-apartment” to “village-residential-commercial.”

ADDISON COUNTY — At about 10 a.m. this Saturday, runners from Middlebury, Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools will toe the line at a cross-country meet at Keenan Farm in Charlotte, while soccer players from Vergennes and Mount Abe will kick off at two different sites.

Three hours later, the new cooperative Mount Abe and VUHS football program will debut, as will the other local elevens.
