City senior housing plan nets $1.35M federal grant

VERGENNES — The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded the Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) $1,355,200 in grants to help finance a proposed 25-unit senior housing project off of Monkton Road.

The grant, confirmed by U.S. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., was a key funding component to the total $5.8 million project that will be built on a 6.5-acre lot adjacent to the Vergennes American Legion and the Shaw’s Supermarket plaza.

Middlebury OKs $3M water bond

MIDDLEBURY — A smattering of Middlebury voters on Tuesday passed a $3 million bond to chip away at a mounting backlog of needed repairs to the town’s water system infrastructure during the next three fiscal years.

The bond passed by a 65-28 Australian ballot tally.

Middlebury has 4,368 registered voters.

LCMM launches boat center

FERRISBURGH — The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum on July 17 will officially unveil its new Hazelett Watercraft Center, a structure that will permanently house the LCMM’s growing collection of boats, including the 35-foot-long ice yacht “Storm King.”

The Storm King and the new center in which it is located are both gifts of longtime LCMM supporters Bill and Dawn Hazelett. Bill Hazelett — the founder of Hazelett Strip-Casting of Colchester — was an avid sailor and longtime owner of the Storm King. He died late last month at the age of 91.

Local gives talk on photo history

MIDDLEBURY — No one knows exactly how town photography began. In the late 1890s, people began ordering large 8” by 10” cameras from the Sears Roebuck mail order catalogue for about $40 (about 10 times the weekly wage of a cobbler). A few entrepreneurial photographers — whose identities are now unknown — began charging for photographs of families posing in front of their homes with the new cameras.

The photographers also made postcards that were mailed around the country.

Town tax rates stable for most of ANwSU district

VERGENNES — The five towns in the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union (ANwSU) area received their state educational property tax rates last week for the next fiscal year. These educational rates, which typically make up about three-fourths of the towns’ total residential tax rates, will mostly remain stable relative to recent years.

Clippings: The importance of where one lives

While I was interviewing Jen Roberts in her Bridport home, she said something that made me want to pause my digital voice recorder.

“I was always more interested in where I wanted to be than what I wanted to do,” she said.

I was interviewing Jen and her husband Judd about their decision to raise their two daughters, Mirabelle and Adalaide, in Addison County.
