MIDDLEBURY — With 6:35 to go in Saturday’s men’s basketball NESCAC quarterfinal at Middlebury College’s, No. 7 Trinity’s Brian Ford sank a long three-pointer with Panther senior guard Tim Edwards right in his face.
The Panthers, No. 2 in NESCAC with an 8-1 record and No. 6 in NCAA Division III at 22-2, were staring at a 49-44 deficit. The possibility loomed of the Panthers being upset by a 10-13 team they had beaten by 14 points eight days before.
Edwards, a senior captain, described the Panthers’ attitude when they fell five points behind.
Armando Vilaseca, Vermont’s Education Commissioner, delivered a sobering message to area school board members last Wednesday in a session that is meant, in part, to shock-and-awe his audience. The numbers tell most of the story, which is that budgets will either have to be cut again and again for the next two years or new revenues will have to be found.
D-II Hoop Seeds Out; Tough Draw for VUHS
The VPA moved quickly today, and the Division II boys’ basketball pairings were out by mid-morning. Vergennes, Otter Valley and Mount Abraham will all play on Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Commodores at home, and the Otters and the Eagles on the road.

PANTHER HOOP AND EDWARDS SPEAKS
Just a few quick notes today on the Panther men’s hoop game yesterday. Senior captain Tim Edwards was kind enough to talk to me for almost five minutes afterward and reflect back on his four years with the Middlebury College program as well as the Panthers’ exciting rally against Trinity.
Not everything fit in the article that will come out tomorrow, which will focus on how the Panthers came back from five points down with six minutes to go, and how Trinity used a smart game plan to put Middlebury in the hole.

MIDDLEBURY — More than a year after the stock market fall shot a huge hole in Middlebury College’s endowment and sent the institution scurrying to right its financial ship, college President Ron Liebowitz this week will present balanced budget proposals through 2015 to the college’s board of trustees.
MIDDLEBURY — While the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant and a tight state budget continue to generate most of the headlines out of the Statehouse, lawmakers continue to work quietly and methodically on another major issue: Health care reform.
Local lawmakers provided an update on further health care reform efforts at Monday’s legislative breakfast at the Middlebury Legion.
BURLINGTON — In the first visit from the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to Vermont in 20 years, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack last weekend told Vermont’s struggling dairy farmers that changes in their industry are overdue, but that any reforms will need to come from farmers, not Washington.
The visit came at the end of what has been the hardest year in recent memory for Vermont farmers, who have been selling milk below the cost of production and taking out enormous loans to keep their farms in business.
