MIDDLEBURY — Jutta Miska on Monday recalled setting up a makeshift gathering spot for area teens around 17 years ago in the Middlebury Recreation Department’s old warming hut.
Local teens took to the space, but it was available only for a few years. And thus the seemingly perennial quest for a Middlebury teen center slogged on.
Until now.
MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) board is considering a 2011 budget of $2,410,761 that reflects a 1.9-percent increase in spending, but would not result in any boost in tipping fees at the district transfer station in Middlebury.
In fact, disposal fees for some recyclables are projected to go down, due to a more lucrative market for such items and because of the provisions of a new electronics waste law that will soon take effect.
MIDDLEBURY — Some of Middlebury’s most prominent citizens will be strolling down the catwalk on Nov. 20 to help raise money for the county’s neediest residents.
BRISTOL — Those anxious to hear exactly where Mount Abraham Union High School will be making its cuts to meet the 2-percent reduction in spending for the upcoming fiscal year will have to wait a bit longer.
The Mount Abraham Union High School Board will not move forward in the budget development process until its next meeting on Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m., according to Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Superintendent Evelyn Howard.
BRISTOL — Teachers who are members of the Addison Northeast Education Association union plan to stage a picket at Mount Abraham Union High School on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 18.
The “informational” picket will run from 5:45 to 7 p.m. and organizers hope it will put pressure on the school boards of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union regarding teacher contracts.
BRANDON — The backstage at Otter Valley Union High School was abuzz with activity Monday night as more than 40 students and adults prepared for the first full dress rehearsal of the school musical, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
The cafeteria had become one large dressing room and was a whirlwind of activity as scores of kids donned make-up, wigs and costumes. Hair was teased, corsets were tightened and hair spray wafted about in abundance.
ADDISON — The Dubois Farm in Addison this week flipped a switch and brought its methane digester on line.
The $2.6 million digester is expected to generate enough power to run 400 homes, and it will take its place as the 10th working digester in Vermont — including the one at Foster Brothers Farm in Middlebury, which has been in operation since the 1980s.
November 16th
The Middlebury Union High School football team faced off against Rice in Saturday's Division II final at Castleton State College. The top-seeded Tigers lost the game 20-38, accepting the runners up trophy. Andy Kirkaldy attended the game and caught up on the whirlwind season with Coach Dennis Smith afterward.
