VERGENNES — Vergennes Police Chief Mike Lowe was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday by City Manager Mel Hawley while Vermont State Police investigate Lowe for driving under the influence of prescription drugs.
Hawley took that action following Sunday afternoon’s incident in which Lowe, 50, was processed by VSP for DUI after the police cruiser he was operating struck a parked car on School Street in a slow-speed accident.

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury selectmen continue to look at ways to avert — or at least minimize — a boost in municipal water and sewer rates that may be needed to offset increasing expenses at a time of declining use of those services.
Town officials recently revealed the potential need to increase Middlebury’s water rate by around 20 percent — from the current $2.85 per 1,000 gallons used to $3.43 — in order to meet greater water department expenses in fiscal year 2010.

PANTON — It’s part of a longstanding ritual for military recruits: Saying goodbye to mom before more than two months of boot camp in a faraway state.
But Vermont Army National Guard enlistee David Hawkins won’t be saying goodbye to his mom when he ships out for Fort Jackson in South Carolina in August; he’ll be saying “see you there.”
That’s because David, 18, and his mom Paula, 40, have both signed up for eight-year stints in the Guard last year and will soon head out for basic training.

BRISTOL — The top-seeded Mount Abraham Union High School baseball team hung on for an 8-6 win over visiting No. 4 Milton in a Division II semifinal on Tuesday. The Eagles will play for their second straight title at the University of Vermont’s Centennial Field on Monday at 6 p.m.
There, the 16-3 Eagles will face a familiar foe: undefeated No. 2 seed Lyndon (17-0). Last June, the Eagles were the No. 3 seed and upset then No. 1 Lyndon, 2-0, in the championship game, which featured a pitchers’ duel between Mount Abe’s Ben Orvis and the Vikings’ Buddy Lamothe.

MIDDLEBURY — The No. 2 Middlebury Union High School girls’ lacrosse team was held to a season-low offensive output by swarming Mount Anthony midfielders and defenders and lost a home Division I semifinal Tuesday to the No. 3 Patriots, 6-4.
The fewest goals the 14-5 Tigers had scored this season were seven at Rutland on April 13. They had scored eight and 14 goals in their two earlier games vs. MAU, and 15 goals four days earlier in their quarterfinal win vs. Woodstock.

MIDDLEBURY — A group of Addison County residents is laying the groundwork for a new respite care home that would provide support services for dying patients and their families.
The nonprofit venture, called Addison Respite Care Home Ltd. (ARCH), would be located on land off Middle Road. A very preliminary plan calls for the approximately 3,000-square-foot facility to be equipped with two private bedrooms for terminally ill residents, along with related amenities and basic accommodations for family visitors.

MIDDLEBURY — Linda King was in 10th grade when she decided she’d had enough of school. It was during the early 1970s, and her parents were going through a divorce — too much domestic tension, confusion and distraction to feel comfortable in a classroom.
“I thought I knew everything,” King, a Cornwall resident, said last week. “I didn’t really like school.”
