Area burglary spree investigated by state and local police

August 23, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — State and local police are working together to solve a series of recent break-ins in New Haven, Middlebury and Bristol, during which thieves have been particularly keen on pilfering small safes and cash boxes.

Vermont State Police Lt. Thomas Noble confirmed two recent cases at homes on River Road and North Street in which safes were stolen from homes in the New Haven area. Noble said there have been four residential burglaries in Bristol involving stolen safes since the beginning of August. Those burglaries have occurred on Lower Notch Road, Rounds Road and Cove Road.

Middlebury police Chief Tom Hanley reported six burglaries in his community since March, primarily in the Cobble Road, Munger Street and Case Street/Route 116 areas. Most recently, on Aug. 19, Middlebury police investigated a break-in at a Munger Street home during which a small safe, among other things, was stolen.

Setbacks and determination

August 23, 2007

By MEGAN JAMES

BRANDON — In the weeks leading up to her departure with the American Lung Association (ALA) of Washington’s annual Big Ride Across America, everything was telling Helyn Anderson not to go on that bike trip. She couldn’t seem to break $4,700 in donations, $800 short of the minimum required to join the ride.

And to make things worse, she had recently discovered her 21-year-old Rockhopper mountain bike was unsafe to ride because it had a fractured frame.

“My thing was going to be, ride the Rockhopper and then throw it in the ocean when I got to D.C.,” Anderson said. But back in June she had $800 and a replacement bike to find or she wasn’t going to make it to that ocean.

Anderson, a 63-year-old Brandon resident and special educator at Middlebury Union Middle School, has always been athletic but never considered herself a serious cyclist. Her thing is riding up and down the Brandon gap, but that’s about it, she said. But ever since she was a kid, she’s fantasized about bicycling across the United States.

Documentary aimed to help teens cope with loss

August 23, 2007

By JOHN FLOWERS

MIDDLEBURY — The end of a life often sparks the beginning of a long, traumatic period of grief and confusion for the survivors — particularly if those survivors are young and have few friends who understand their plight.

But students throughout Vermont will soon get a better understanding of the grieving and healing process that follows a loved one’s death, thanks to a new documentary film spearheaded by Hospice Volunteer Services (HVS) of Addison County.

The documentary, featuring footage of a support group discussion among teens who have recently lost a parent or other family member, will soon be distributed to every high school in the state.

David White, an HVS staff member, explained the seed for the documentary was planted a few years ago, when hospice volunteer Deb Cossart brought forth the idea of establishing support groups for teens who had recently lost loved ones. With help, HVS was able to establish teen support groups at Mount Abraham and Vergennes union high schools during the 2005-2006 academic years.
