MIDDLEBURY — Service on the Cornwall School Board seemed scripted for Cindy Peet.

Her husband Ed’s grandfather, Edward H. Peet, donated the 5-acre parcel on which the Bingham Memorial School now sits. It was carved from the 7th-generation Peet Farm where Cindy and Ed Peet reside. They can see the schoolhouse from their home.

VTrans, planners revive idea of Vergennes truck bypass

Posted on November 22, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Once again the possibility is alive of a bypass that would send truck traffic around downtown Vergennes, although local and state officials say one is not likely to be built for at least 30 years.

At a Nov. 15 meeting in Middlebury of the Addison County Regional Planning Commission’s Transportation Advisory Committee, or TAC, Vermont Agency of Transportation officials agreed to work with regional planners to study city bypass options, with a recommendation probably to be made by the end of 2018.

MIDDLEBURY — Around 17 months into its run, the Open Door Clinic’s dental program is serving a lot of patients with a bare-bones budget, thanks to the help of many area dentists who are donating their services for free.

Clinic officials did a lot of preliminary planning for the dental program in 2015 and hired dental hygienist Heidi Considine to begin seeing patients in April of 2016.

Vergennes eyeing earlier voting hours

Posted on November 22, 2017 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

VERGENNES — Vergennes residents could at some point have the option of voting in the morning before work, as do voters in most other Vermont towns.

At their Nov. 14 meeting, Vergennes City Council members talked seriously about changing the 9 a.m. start of voting hours to 7 a.m. The statewide closing hour for polls is 7 p.m.

Alderman Jeff Fritz opened the discussion by recommending a charter change, which would require approval by residents and the Vermont Legislatures, to make polling hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Billings storm note of appreciation_1436.jpg

Our state certainly could be thankful for 64 degrees with our power off, which it was for six days or more after the recent wind storm. Some different storm; we could remember the hurricane in 1950.

Gov. Scott: State complies as a 'sanctuary site'

Posted on November 22, 2017 |
By Mark Johnson of VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott insisted on Thursday that Vermont is in compliance with federal laws and asserted the U.S. attorney general “had not done his homework” before including the state on a list of so-called sanctuary sites threatened with the loss of federal funds.

“We believe we’re on safe ground,” Scott said.

The governor said the state law that triggered a warning letter from the U.S. Justice Department had been legally reviewed and found not to be in conflict with federal rules.

By Mike Polhamus of VTDigger.org

VERMONT — A legislative panel wants to hear the agriculture agency’s case for why farmers should be exempt from environmental enforcement under Vermont’s land use law.

The Act 250 committee, which met Nov. 15, is tasked with proposing fixes to the state’s land use law that will bring 50-year-old regulations up to speed with new environmental pressures.

At the next meeting to be held next month, the committee will ask the Agency of Agriculture to justify land use exemptions for farms.
