Vergennes to host a drug treatment center: Valley Vista finally set for Alden Place

VERGENNES — Years after Valley Vista initially intended to operate in Vergennes, officials of the Bradford dependency treatment center now hope to open their doors at 1 Alden Place in Vergennes in a matter of weeks to help Vermonters suffering from drug and alcohol addiction.

Sen. Bray seeks to put teeth in renewable energy target

MONTPELIER — It was six years ago that then-Gov. Peter Shumlin recommended the state satisfy 90 percent of it energy needs through renewable sources by the year 2050.

Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, is spearheading a bill that he hopes will make Shumlin’s goal a reality.

But as a Muslim — he is co-chaplain with his wife, Naila Baloch, at Middlebury College — Scurich was deeply wounded when President Donald Trump banned entry to the United States from seven Muslim countries and banned Syrian refugees indefinitely.

40 'workforce housing' units proposed for Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A Williston company is seeking permission to build a three-story, 40-unit apartment building off Middlebury’s Court Street that would provide “moderate affordable housing.”

The approximately 43,000-square-foot building would be built on a 1.2-acre lot in Middlebury South Village (MSV), a planned unit development that already includes a mixture of housing, businesses and offices between Creek Road and Middle Road.

Two candidates vie for New Haven board: Bruhl, Christiano both stress fairness and listening to all sides

NEW HAVEN — After a tumultuous year in which the New Haven selectboard led the community decision-making process on the multimillion-dollar Vermont Green Line proposal and then negotiated a formal agreement, New Haven residents must choose between two new faces for the selectboard seat currently held by Doug Tolles.

Taborri Bruhl and Jon D. Christiano are competing for Tolles’ three-year seat.

Voting will take place on Town Meeting Day, March 7.

ANWSD to hold Monday budget forum

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest School District board members and administrators will discuss their roughly $21.1 million unified budget proposal for the 2017-2018 academic year at the board’s annual meeting next Monday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m. in the Vergennes Union High School library.

On Town Meeting Day voters in Addison, Ferrisburgh, Panton, Vergennes and Waltham will vote for the first time on a unified ANSWD budget to cover operations for all four ANWSD schools and their central office, and the district’s share of Hannaford Career Center costs.

New Brandon budget would lower taxes

BRANDON — While the proposed Brandon town budget includes a modest overall spending increase, voter approval would mean a lower tax rate.

That’s because there is $50,000 less allocated for paving under a special appropriation on the warning than there was in the current town budget.

Expanded selectboard draws new candidates in Starksboro

STARKSBORO — Residents of Starksboro voted last December to expand the town’s three-person selectboard to a five-person board.

With one existing selectboard seat coming up for re-election, the expansion means there will be three selectboard seats on the Town Meeting Day ballot. As March 7 nears, voters face choices in two of those three positions.
